Earlier this month, Pete Alonso stunned the MLB world when he joined the Baltimore Orioles on a $155 million deal. On Monday, the 5-time All-Star opened up about his move and admitted that he was not “salty” about the New York Mets letting him go.
The first baseman was one of the top stars of the team. After being selected by the Queens-based side in the 2016 draft, he made his debut on Opening Day in 2019. In his rookie season, Alonso smashed 53 home runs and took home the NL Rookie of the Year award.
Alonso would go on to become the Mets’ home run king last season. In August, he hit his 253rd home run and surpassed the record of Darryl Strawberry for the most home runs hit by a Mets star. He ended the campaign with 38 home runs and 126 RBIs while batting at an average of .272 in 162 games.
Despite his brilliance, the Mets were unable to make it to the playoffs. Following a massive collapse in the second half of the season, the team missed the postseason on the final day following a 4-0 loss against the Miami Marlins.
It was after this loss that Alonso revealed his intention of opting out of his deal and becoming a free agent. This time, the Mets would not chase him. As per Anthony DiComo, the team never made a formal offer to him.

A few days after this development, former Mets star Todd Frazier took a shot at the team. The 2-time All-Star, who bestowed the “Polar Bear” nickname on Alonso, expressed that the 31-year-old was probably pis*ed by his ex-employees.
I think he was a little pis*ed off. You see all these guys getting these big contracts. He deserved it just as much as anybody else did… I think he’s worked his b*** off.

On Monday, Alonso appeared on the Foul Territory podcast. During his conversation with Frazier, he admitted that he was not “salty” about what happened and claimed that he gave everything to the Mets.
It’s okay, because I know I gave everything I had every single day. I’m appreciative of it, but at the end of the day, I’m happy that it’s not just where I’m going to be playing but also where my family is going to be. I feel like I’m in the right place… The Orioles treated us excellent the whole way. It’s not like the Mets didn’t. I feel like we’re in the right spot. How can I be salty over that?

Pete Alonso opens up about Mets’ offseason moves
The New York Mets have made several changes during this offseason. As the team tries to reconstruct their squad, they gave up several of their core players. During his appearance on the Foul Territory podcast, Pete Alonso commented on his ex-team’s offseason moves.

The Mets first traded away outfielder Brandon Nimmo to the Texas Rangers in exchange for Marcus Semien. They then lost Edwin Diaz and Pete Alonso.
While Diaz joined the Los Angeles Dodgers on a $69 million deal after opting out of his deal, Alonso’s deal with the Orioles came just a day later after this.
On Monday, the team also traded away 2-time All-Star Jeff McNeil. The NL East side traded him away to the Athletics in exchange for a 17-year-old pitcher, Yordan Rodriguez.
When asked if Alonso foresaw this after the way things went in the 2025 season, the 2-time Home Run Derby champion expressed that he does not want to go down the rabbit hole.
That’s kind of a philosophical thing where it’s like, hey, that’s just what they wanted to do. But if you think about 2025, it came down to one game. It came down to one game. There were a ton of guys hurt. If they weren’t, that would’ve put us in a better situation… It was a one-game, not-in-the-playoffs situation. I don’t wanna go down the rabbit hole because it’s not my decision.

The Mets have responded to these departures by adding Devin Williams, Jorge Polanco and Luke Weaver. Williams, who struggled with the New York Yankees in the 2025 season, joined them on a 3-year, $51 million deal.
Polanco was part of the Seattle Mariners side who went all the way to Game 7 of the American League Championship Series (ALCS) last season. Meanwhile, Weaver also joined the team while spending the 2025 campaign with the Yankees.
After trading away McNeil, the Mets are rumored to be exploring a trade regarding Ketel Marte. What others moves will the team make remains to be seen.
