Pete Alonso made a huge announcement regarding his future on Sunday. After the New York Mets crashed out of postseason contention following a 4-0 loss against the Miami Marlins, the first baseman announced that he will opt out of his 2-year contract with the team.

The slugger has been one of the top names in the Mets’ offense in recent years. In 2023, he declined a 7-year $158 million contract offer from the team and decided to see out his contract in 2024.

After the team lost against the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League Championship Series (NLCS), he became a free agent by declining the qualifying offer.

In the offseason, the Mets would first turn their attention towards Juan Soto. After weeks of speculation and rumors, the team landed the Dominican international on a 15-year $765 million deal and shattered several records.

This led many to wonder whether the team would now go for Alonso. After almost 4 months, the Mets re-signed their power hitter. Alonso and the team agreed on a 2-year $54 million contract that would see him earn $30 million in 2025 and $24 million in his final year. He did have the opt out clause in his deal.

The “Polar Bear” decided to trigger this clause on Sunday. The Mets lost 4-0 against the Marlins and missed out on the final wild card spot as the Cincinnati Reds held the tiebreaker over them. Following a disappointing season, Alonso addressed his future in the press conference after the game.

I’ve really appreciated it and have been nothing but full of gratitude every single day. Nothing is guaranteed, but we’ll see what happens – I’ve loved being a Met. Hopefully, they’ve appreciated me the same.

Pete Alonso said as per SNY

The 31-year-old did express thinking about re-signing with the Mets and that it would be “great” to return to Queens. However, nothing is guaranteed at the moment.

Pete Alonso and the NY Mets were inconsistent throughout the 2025 season

Looking at the numbers, Pete Alonso did have a fantastic year with the New York Mets this season. However, just like his team, he was a bit inconsistent at times.

While playing in all 162 games, the first baseman had a slash line of .272/.347/.524. He slammed 38 home runs and was second in the league for RBIs with 126. He also lead the National League in doubles at 41.

His strong performances saw him earn his 5th All-Star game appearance this year. He also surpassed Darryl Strawberry‘s 253 home runs mark to become the new Mets home run king. A few days ago, he slammed a 3-run walk-off home run against the Texas Rangers to end an 8-game losing skid of the team.

He though, did struggle at the plate at times. In a must-win game for the team on Sunday, he went 1-for-4 while striking out once. Following the loss, he expressed frustration and claimed that it was a disappointing season for the team.

It’s kind of beyond frustration, I think it’s just straight up disappointing, there’s no way to sugarcoat it.

Pete Alonso said in the press conference

The Mets had an inconsistent run, just like him. The team, which started strong, fell apart midway through the season. In the 2nd half of the campaign, after the All-Star Break, the team had several long losing runs, which put them out of the title picture.

Going into the final week, the destiny of the Mets was out of their hands. On the final day, they needed to win their match and hoped for the Reds to lose against the Milwaukee Brewers. While the Reds did lose, so did the Mets. They finished the season with an 83-79 record after being 45-24 at one stage of the campaign.

Only time will tell what the future in store for the Mets and Pete Alonso. Apart from him, closer Edwin Diaz will be the other big name the team will be in discussion with. The pitcher can also opt out of his remaining 2 year deal. However, he has not decided anything yet.
