After weeks of speculations, rumors and drama, the Pete Alonso free agency saga has finally come to and. The 4-time MLB All-Star has reportedly agreed to re-sign with the New York Mets on a 2-year $54 million deal.
Alonso turned down a 7-year $158 million contract extension in 2023. At the end of the 2024 season, he rejected the qualifying offer from the Mets and elected free agency in hopes to land a better deal with them or any other team.
The Mets would later turn their attention to land Juan Soto. After landing the Dominican international on a massive 15-year $765 million deal, there were questions on whether the team would be able to afford to bring back Alonso.
A few weeks ago, team owner Steve Cohen claimed that they did not like the offer presented to them by Alonso and his camp led by agent Scott Boras. This comment from Cohen also came at a time when Alonso was linked with a move to the Toronto Blue Jays.
However, the “Polar Bear” is not leaving the Queens. After rejecting a 3-year $70 million deal and flirting with other clubs, he and the Mets have finally come to an agreement that will keep him at CitiField.

As per reports, Alonso’s two-year contract with the Mets does have an opt-out clause for the 2026 season. For now, he will earn $10 million as a signing bonus and make around $20 million during the 2025 campaign. As for 2026, he will earn around $24 million thus taking this deal to $54 million.
In total, Pete Alonso's deal will guarantee him $54 million over two years, sources tell ESPN.

How could the New York Mets line-up for the 2025 season with Pete Alonso back on the team?
The New York Mets have been one of the few highly active teams this year’s offseason. They have made some really big moves which have attracted a lot of attention. With Pete Alonso back on the team, their hitting line-up could be a tough one to go up against.

Along with Francisco Lindor and Juan Soto, Pete Alonso could become a part of a dangerous trio like the Mookie Betts, Shohei Ohtani, and Freddie Freeman trio. For the Mets, Lindor would be the lead-off hitter with Soto in second and Alonso in third.
Mark Vientos, who made a huge mark on the team in the 2024 season, could bat as the No.4 hitter along with Brandon Nimmo as the No.5 and Starling Marte as the No.6 hitters. Marte would likely be the designated hitter (DH) of the team. Francisco Alvarez, Jeff McNeil, and Jose Siri could be the No.7, No.8, and No. 9 hitters for the team going forward.

The big question now is – Can the NY Mets actually go on to challenge for the World Series title? With the experience of Soto, Alonso, and Lindor, the team would be hoping to avenge their NLCS defeat against the Dodgers from last season and hope to make it to Fall Classic for the first time since 2015.
