The sweepstakes for Pete Alonso finally ended on Wednesday night. The 4-time All-Star agreed to return to the New York Mets on a 2-year $54 million deal, having previously rejected the team’s 3-year $70 million offer.
Alonso was one of the big names on the Mets team who was going into free agency. The team tried to keep him for one more season with the $21.05 million qualifying offer which he turned down.
He had also rejected a 7-year $158 million contract extension in June 2023. In this offseason, he and his agent Scott Boras were looking for a big deal from the Mets and the other suitors.
However, teams did not try to match the offer which they had desired. The club had offered a $70 million for 3 years which he reportedly turned down.
With Spring Training around the corner, time was running out for him to sign a deal and go to Spring Training games and get ready for the new season. On Wednesday, Alonso and the Mets finally came to an agreement.
The 2-year $54 million deal will have an opt-out clause after the 2025 season. This deal will see him earn around $30 million this year with $10 million as signing bonus and $20 million as base salary. If he does not opt-out after the season, he will earn $24 million in 2026.

Following the conclusion of the deal, the name of Boras has once again come up in the spotlight. One of his client Blake Snell signed a two-year deal last season with the San Francisco Giants.
Following the end of the season, he opted out of his deal and penned down a five-year $182 million deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers. Alonso could follow in the footsteps of his and other Boras’ clients and can try free agency next season again.

Fans on X have been left in split with this deal. While the Mets fans are happy to see him return to Queens, some questioned his agent Scott Boras’ work in this agreement. One fan wrote, “Now he just needs to fire Scott Boras” while reacting to this development.

Speaking of Boras and his clients, another top name that he represents and who is still unsigned is Alex Bregman. The third baseman, just like Alonso was looking for a bigger deal and rejected a $156 million offer from his former team, Houston Astros. At the moment, the Chicago Cubs are labeled as favorites to land him.
