On Thursday, the 2024-25 season for the Dallas Stars came to an end. The team got crushed 6-3 by the Edmonton Oilers in Game 5 which eliminated them from the Western Conference Final. Following the loss, Stars coach Peter DeBoer threw goalie Jake Oettinger under the bus which did not sit well with the fans.
After winning the first game of the series by a 6-3 scoreline, the Stars got dominated by the Oilers. With 3 successive defeats, the Dallas-based team were on the brink of elimination heading into the game on Thursday.
The Oilers started off strong and scored 2 goals within the opening 8 minutes to take a 2-0 lead. Unimpressed with the performance of Oettinger, DeBoer took him out of the game and replaced him with Casey DeSmith.
The move to bring DeSmith did not bring any change to the Stars’ fortune as the goalie conceded within a minute of coming on. While they were able to show some fight and bring the game to 3-2, the Oilers eventually ran out as 6-3 winners and handed the Stars another defeat in the Western Conference Final.

After the game, DeBoer took a swipe at his team’s No.1 goaltender. In the press conference, the Stars’ head coach pointed out his performances from this series and last year’s playoffs.
I didn’t blame it all on Jake. But the reality is, if you go back to last year’s playoffs he’s lost six of seven games to Edmonton. We gave up two goals on two shots in an elimination game. It was partly to spark our team and wake them up, and partly and knowing the status quo had not been working. It’s a pretty big sample size.
DeBoer: "I didn't blame it all on Jake, but the reality is if you go back to last year's playoffs, he's lost six of seven games to Edmonton. And we give up two goals on two shots in an elimination game. … That's a pretty big sample size."

While Oettinger has struggled in the past two series against the Oilers, he has also been one of the best in the business. In the 18 games he played in the playoffs this year, the American goaltender won 9 of them and had a Goals Against Average (GAA) of 2.82 and .905 Save Percentage.
Social media thrash Peter DeBoer for fierce comments regarding Jake Oettinger
The Dallas Stars were handed another playoff elimination at the hands of the Edmonton Oilers. After the game, coach Peter DeBoer took in direct jab at Jake Oettinger which did not impress the NHL fans.

Several users on X thrashed the 56-year-old coach for his harsh words regarding his goalie. One user wrote, “That’s a really horrible and immature thing to say about any player” while reacting to these words from the Stars head coach.
Check out that and some other fan reactions regarding this development below:

Apparently he wants to lose the series and his franchise goalie in one game

famously ends well for coaches who put all the blame on one player immediately after a playoff elimination game

Coach should be fired before midnight

DeBoer pulled this same crap in Vegas. Threw Flower under the bus.

Wow not good. FFS the whole team came out flat and left him hanging out to dry.

DeBoer just cost himself the Stars HC job. Oettinger will never respect him again. You pull him and then get scored against 1 minute later

What a joke
Agreed- It was completely our D’s fault.

Otter did the best he could.
If he wanted to do something. Bench another player. Tell them to play or get off the ice.
The loss on Thursday marked the third straight year that the Stars had been eliminated from the Western Conference Final. They lost 4-2 against the Oilers last year as well. In 2023, they suffered a similar fate and lost in Game 6 against the Vegas Golden Knights.
Peter DeBoer’s record in Western Conference Final takes another massive hit following elimination against Oilers
While Peter DeBoer has an incredible Game 7 record, there are also some records that he does not want to see. One of them is his record in the Western Conference Finals. With the loss against the Oilers, it took another massive hit.

The Stars’ head coach has not only lost 3 WCF in a row, but he has also lost in his previous 3 appearances. He lost twice with the Vegas Golden Knights in the 2019-20 and 2020-21 seasons. Before that, he had lost in the 2018-19 season with the San Jose Sharks. He is 0-6 in the Western Conference Final since the 2018-19 season.

2018-19: Lost in WCF with SJS
2019-20: Lost in WCF with LVK
2020-21: Lost in WCF with LVK
2021-22: Missed playoffs with LVK
2022-23: Lost in WCF with DAL
2023-24: Lost in WCF with DAL

DeBoer has played in the Stanley Cup Finals before though. In his first seasons with the New Jersey Devils and the Sharks, he reached the finals. However, he ended up losing in both of them and is yet to lift the Stanley Cup.
