There seems to be a new tradition setting its course since last Christmas, where the quarterbacks are giving their offensive line gifts on the special occasion. While the gesture is heartwarming, legend Peyton Manning is absolutely against it.
This tradition is rooted in the belief that just as important as team building and leadership demonstrated by quarterbacks on the field and locker room, it is equally essential to uplift players’ spirit by acknowledging their contributions. And Manning emphazised the players’ contribution to be essential for them to earn appreciation, which in most cases wasn’t seen this season, yet the quarterback rewarded them.
During Monday’s episode of ManningCast, the two-time Super Bowl champion vented his frustration with the new tradition of the league. He mentioned that he also rewarded his offensive line during his time, but only when they performed well; he refrained from giving gifts when they failed to protect him or when the team did not make the playoffs.

Though the Hall of Famer did not mention the names of the quarterbacks and teams he was referring to, his words very much indicated former New York Giants’ Daniel Jones, Cincinnati Bengals’ Joe Burrow, and San Francisco 49ers’ Brock Purdy. Both teams fell short of making it to the postseason, yet got rewarded big-time by their quarterbacks.
Joe Burrow gifts linemen samurai swords instead of traditional Christmas presents
Unlike other quarterbacks in the league who rewarded their offensive line with luxurious presents on Christmas, Burrow surprised his linemen with a unique gift: authentic Japanese katana swords. The first look of the gift was given by Bengals center Ted Karras during his interview with WLWT’s Lindsay Stone.

As for their 2024 campaign, it ended on a brighter note as they concluded the 2024 regular season with a strong victory in the final week– which would have advanced them to the postseason only if the Kansas City Chiefs hadn’t lost against the Denver Broncos after making all their starters rest before the playoffs.
