Daniel Jones’ first game after a lengthy injury did not go according to plan—he looked shaky and did not use his feet too well, completing just 11 passes in his first preseason game. While football fans poke fun at the New York Giants for sticking with Jones despite the poor showing, former MVP quarterback Peyton Manning asked them to give the 27-year-old time to adjust.
Manning was one of the guest speakers at the recent Michael Rubin’s FanaticsFest, where he spoke on several matters with host Stephen A. Smith. When discussing Jones and the Giants’ head coach, Brian Daboll, Manning pointed out that the pair needed to be patient and grind it out.
I like [Brian] Daboll; he has been around; he is a good playcaller; just he and [Daniel] Jones gotta have some games together right? You know, you have a couple of games and injuries, what not. You gotta get some sweat equity and get a little continuity.Peyton Manning said

In his view, the NFC East is wide open for any team to grab their chance and win it. He is also looking forward to the Week 1 matchup between the New York Jets and the San Francisco 49ers.
Brian Daboll evaluates Daniel Jones’ pre-season game against the Texans
There was much smoke about whether Jones would be able to bounce back after his Achilles tear. His performance in the Texans game wasn’t reassuring. Although he helped running back Devin Singletary score a rushing touchdown, the Duke graduate threw 2 interceptions in the first quarter.
During the press conference after the game, Daboll tried his best to defend Jones but also highlighted the areas he wants QB #1 to improve upon in future games.
There were two plays that we'd like to have back. Thought he played fast, but it’s different when you are out there than it’s in practice, so it was good for him to get out there and get some live reps.Brian Daboll said
One of the interceptions from Jones was due to a complete lack of judgment on his part. He backed up too much, and eventually, the Texans blitz-cornered him to throw the ball straight to an on-rushing defender. The other one was under thrown to WR Jalin Hyatt.

Obviously, the backed-up play we have talked about that. We all liked to have that one back… I thought he made a lot of good decisions as the game went on—made some nice throws—you know, first time out there after a long layoff, live ball, it was good for him.Brian Daboll said about Daniel Jones
Jones needs to show something to the Giants coaching staff to prove that he is still their first choice. Otherwise, backups—Drew Lock and Tommy DeVito will push him down the pecking order.
