Derek Brunson, the longtime UFC veteran and middleweight contender, was released from his contract this September. Following this, he signed with PFL (The Professional Fighters League), according to MMA Manager Ali Abdelaziz. Abdelaziz said Brunson is scheduled to compete as a light heavyweight and enter the $1 million tournament in 2024.

Derek Brunson, he signed with PFL“, said Abdelaziz in an interview with The Schmo. “He’s a PFL fighter. He’s going to fight before the end of the year. He did a lot for the UFC, the UFC did a lot for him, he [had] a great career…and now, he’s looking to make his run at [the] light heavyweight title for PFL“.

Brunson left UFC after nearly an 11-year run with the promotion. He was scheduled to face Roman Dolidze at UFC 295 in November, but he chose to depart early. Abdelaziz previously indicated that this was a mutual decision. During his interview, Abdelaziz mentioned that it was time for Brunson to move on from the UFC, despite the extraordinary growth there. Some fans, however, did not agree with this. As such, they have displayed their disapproval through social media.

Brunson will face two-time PFL Welterweight Champion Ray Cooper III in a Middleweight showcase bout. The latter is making his 2023 middleweight PFL debut, while Brunson enters with a 23-9 record in his first fight with the league. The bout is set to take place on November 24.

Fans react to Derek Brunson joining up with PFL, and debuting in a high-stakes fight

Ali Abdelaziz, of Dominance MMA, has announced the signing of Derek Brunson into the PFL. The former UFC star is set to debut at a $1,000,000 light heavyweight tourney set in 2024. And fans in the MMA world are dismayed by this news.

Brunson was at the end of the final bout of his six-fight deal, initially signed in December 2019 with the UFC. However, he chose to depart before a pre-scheduled match on mutual terms. Despite his two recent skids, Brunson has been a major reckoning force in his previous promotion. His victories and highlights have included opponents like Lyoto Machida, Darren Till, Kevin Holland, and Uriah Hall. But the $1 million dollar light heavyweight bout is too high-stakes for anyone to start off with. Therefore, people are reacting to it with rigor. PFL officials have not commented on the matter yet. Unsurprisingly, Brunson took to social media to announce his arrival in style.

Brunson will join the light heavyweight division. This is because PFL has not had a middleweight category since 2018. Tickets for the 2023 PFL World Championship are currently on sale. The event card will feature 12 finalists facing off for six world titles and six $1 Million US Dollar dollar championship purses. One of which Brunson aims to break the bank on with a spectacular debut.
