Golf is one of the most expensive sports in the world, and it reflects in everything that the golfer goes through while playing on tour, especially in the prize money in the PGA Tour as well as sometimes the costs. Highly regarded golf equipment if often said to be quite expensive, and needs to be maintained well.

Often Pro golfers are seen reaching into their bags to take out a new golf ball to use while on a tour. Unlike the old times however, this practice has reduced, since the modern golf ball technology can last for quite some time as the materials used to make these golf balls are more durable and resistant to cuts. It also depends on the type of golfer and the kinds of swing they might be using. So, how often to golfers change their ball?

Pro golfers are known to change their balls every five to six holes. It is important for a golfer who has a fast swing speed to have a golf ball that can hold up to its speed. Therefore, golf balls get changed five to six times unless there is some issue with them. If the ball hits a tree, or a path or an obstruction then it might be left with a mark which leaves it unusable.

Any mark left on the golf ball means it cannot be used because it will affect the flight and spin. Caddies are especially known to keep an eye out for such perfection and change the ball as and when required. The one ball rule also must be noted for the PGA Tour. This rule states that even if a golfer changes their ball, it must be of the same type. If the dimple pattern on the ball is no longer intact, it is usually time to change the ball.
