As much as Tom Brady wanted to avoid shedding strong opinions from the broadcasting booth, when he stepped inside, he did quite the contrary. And his bold take on young quarterbacks has already started making the headlines, drawing vehement disagreement from his fellow, Phil Simms.
In a conversation with Stephen A. Smith, the former NFL quarterback argued that rookie quarterbacks having to start their professional careers so early, made them focus on learning playbooks rather than focus on their development.
Simms, who doesn’t see eye-to-eye on the subject with Brady, didn’t hold back from expressing his ardent opinions during the recent episode of the Bleav podcast “Simms Complete.”
I heard the Tom Brady comments. I disagree that you’re just throwing them into this. One, they’re going to play because they’re the most talented quarterback on the team. It’s not like they’ve got a backup, like ‘Well, we’re just playing him because we drafted him.’ No!Phil Simms said
Compared to when the seven-time Super Bowl champion entered the NFL in 2000, football has undeniably evolved. That’s why teams are now placing their trust and hopes in young quarterbacks like Caleb Williams, Jayden Daniels, and Drake Maye to lead their offenses.
How the quarterback position keeps ‘elevating’ in college and NFL, per Simms
While acknowledging how young quarterbacks are making an early start in their professional careers, Simms argued that college football has advanced a lot over the years and has become a more pass-focused offense, in order to make young talents entering the league better prepared.
These guys have the talent and the experience. It’s the number of throws that they are getting in college that I think’s making the transition easier. The quarterback position just keeps elevating.Phil Simms said
Simms firmly supported his argument that the quarterback position has evolved significantly over the past decade. However, since these players have been training with increased reps, leading a team in the league doesn’t seem as daunting.
While the game remains as challenging as ever, the key difference is that players’ potential is honed from an earlier stage, giving them ample time to learn and develop at such a prominent level.
