The Philadelphia Phillies are the kings of the National League East once again. On Tuesday, they edged out the Los Angeles Dodgers 6-5 in extra innings at Dodger Stadium to clinch the division title for a 2nd year running. Following their win, the New York Mets would catch some strays from the fans.

The Mets were once having the best record in the league and had a huge lead over the Phillies in the NL East division. However, following their midseason slump, the tide began to change in the Phillies favor.

As the Mets kept on spiraling down, the Phillies kept on moving up. While they did get swept in a 3-game series against the New York side in August, they hit them back last week. The Phillies completed a 4-game sweep of the Mets and took a giant step towards clinching the division.

On Monday, the Phillies started a huge series against the Dodgers. Unlike them, the Dodgers still have some work to do to guarantee another divisional title as the San Diego Padres continue to chase them down.

In a topsy-turvy game, Kyle Schwarber, Bryce Harper, and Mookie Betts homered for their side. The Dodgers would force the game into extra innings with a solo shot from Andy Pages in the bottom of the 9th inning.

Blake Treinen would start the 10th inning by intentionally walking Harper. The Phillies then had double steals. They took then take the lead through a sacrifice fly from J.T. Realmuto.

The Dodgers were unable to master a comeback and ended up losing the game 6-5. This loss saw the Phillies clinch their division at the home of the reigning World Series champions.

The Phillies are the 1st team to clinch the division title this year. Despite the Milwaukee Brewers being the first team to clinch a playoff berth and having a better record than them, they sealed the title first due to the gap between them and their rivals. The Brewers are currently 5 games ahead of the Chicago Cubs, so there is still some work left for them to be done to clinch the title.

The Phillies reached the World Series in 2022 but lost to the Houston Astros. They would then lose to the Arizona Diamondbacks in the National League Championship Series (NLCS) in 2023. Last year, they were eliminated by the Mets in the National League Division Series (NLDS) in 4 games.

Speaking with the reporters after the division win, Kyle Schwarber claimed that are expecting a lot from themselves and hopes to have a deep postseason run.

We keep pushing, we keep grinding. It’s a lot of the same faces, right? Everyone knows and expects what we expect out of each other. I think that’s the great thing. We expect a lot out of ourselves.

Kyle Schwarber said

If the season ended on Monday, the Phillies would get a bye and head to the No.2 seed in the National League. They could end up facing the Dodgers in the division series. So this current series between these two teams could be a dress rehearsal for the upcoming NLDS.
