The Philadelphia Phillies have added some experience to their bullpen. On Sunday, the team announced the signing of 2-time World Series winner Walker Buehler. This move comes just a few days after he was released from the Boston Red Sox.

Buehler did not have the best of times during the 2024 regular season. After missing the entirety of the 2023 season due to Tommy John Surgery, he spent almost 2 months on the sidelines in 2024 due to a right hip injury.

The right-handed pitcher, though, bounced back during the postseason run of the Los Angeles Dodgers. He had a dominating performance in Game 3 of the World Series against the New York Yankees and earned his first career save by throwing a scoreless 9th inning in Game 5 to clinch the World Series for his former team.

He would become a free agent in the offseason and would later sign a one-year $21.05 million deal with the Red Sox in December last year. His time in Boston, however, did not go as he and the team had hoped for.

The 31-year-old pitcher struggled with injuries and had several inconsistent performances. Before the start of the three-game series against the Pittsburgh Pirates, he was released from the team. He finished his tenure in Boston with a 7-7 record from 22 starts while having an ERA of 5.45.

The Phillies, who are top of the National League East with a 79-58 record, would rope him on Sunday. The two parties agreed on a minor league deal, which will allow the veteran pitcher to pitch in the postseason. As per reports from MLB.com, he will report to Triple-A Lehigh Valley, where he will make one start on Saturday before joining the Phillies roster in the upcoming week.

While there were some fans who were hyped with this signing, there were some who were not so excited about it. Some threw in trolls and jokes. One user wrote, “Not moved,” while making their feelings known towards this development. Check out that and some other reactions from X below.

Buehler joins a bullpen that currently consists of Cristopher Sanchez, Ranger Suarez, Aaron Nola, Jesus Luzardo, and Taijuan Walker. The team recently lost ace Zach Wheeler for the entire season through venous thoracic outlet syndrome, which will require surgery.

Phillies “excited” to have Walker Buehler on the team

Walker Buehler is back in the National League. After spending a few months in the American League, the pitcher is returning to the NL following a deal with the Philadelphia Phillies. The team’s President of Baseball Operations, Dave Dombrowski, claimed that the team is “excited” to have him.

While speaking on the addition of Buehler, Dombrowski expressed that the team is planning to use a six-man rotation from this point onwards. This would give their starters an extra day of rest.

He’s happy with the plan. We’re happy with the plan. And we’re very excited to have him because we think he makes us better and puts us in a position where we’re trying to do anything we can to qualify for the postseason and then, if we can make it, to do anything we can to win.

Dave Dombrowski said

Speaking of the Phillies, the team on Sunday ended up losing 3-1. This saw them fail to complete a 4-game sweep of the Atlanta Braves. Their next assignment sees them take on the Milwaukee Brewers, the team with the best record in the league, at 85-53, in a 3-game road trip.
