Novak Djokovic sat for an interview with controversial broadcaster Piers Morgan, which will soon be released. This came as a complete shock to the tennis world because, in the past, Morgan censured the 24-time Grand Slam champion in the midst of his vaccination saga.

Back in 2022, when Djokovic entered Australia for the Grand Slam event unvaccinated and was eventually deported by the government, Morgan at that time called the Serb a “cheat” and a “liar”. Morgan, however, has apologized for those remarks, starting the interview with, “I’m gonna start by making an apology”.

It speaks volumes about the person that you are.

Novak Djokovic replied

When Djokovic made his comeback in the Major Down Under, he ended his campaign by breezing past Stefanos Tsitsipas in the final, while last year and this year, he lost in the semifinals. Last year, eventual champion Jannik Sinner knocked him out in four sets, while this year, an injury forced him to give a walkover to eventual runner-up Alexander Zverev.

Some from the tennis world want Djokovic to hang up his racket at the Australian Open because here, he has not only won 10 titles, but also the deportation saga happened here. During the interview, Djokovic also talked about Sinner’s doping case.

The Italian tested positive for the banned anabolic steroid clostebol last year, and after almost a year of drama, the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) handed him a three-month suspension. Djokovic thinks the cloud of the doping scandal will follow the four-time Grand Slam champion forever, like the Covid vaccination drama did for him. Sinner in Turin, bidding to defend his title.

Despite his three-month suspension, Sinner continued to produce consistent performance and, as a result, the reigning Australian Open champion ended up playing three more Grand Slam finals, winning only at Wimbledon, losing the French Open and the US Open to Carlos Alcaraz. At the ATP Finals, he will next lock horns with Zverev in his second round-robin match.

When he beat Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz in the Geneva Open final, the 38-year-old became the third man in the Open Era to reach 100 or more singles titles, joining Jimmy Connors and longtime rival Roger Federer. Recently, during the Nothing Major podcast, former ATP player Sam Querrey claimed one of Djokovic’s goals at this stage of his career is also to surpass Federer’s tally of 103 titles.

That was his 101st title. Federer has 103 titles. I think he wants to pass Federer.

Apart from the Geneva Open and the Hellenic Championship, the 24-time Grand Slam champion also played the Miami Open final, losing the match to Jakub Mensik. Djokovic also featured in every semifinal in Grand Slam events this season, following his defeat to eventual champion Carlos Alcaraz at the US Open. Nole declared that he wants to continue his hunt for his historic 25th Major next year.

I’m kind of starting to think that Novak wants that record, at least to jump Roger, because everyone talks Roger, Rafa, Novak, it’s the ongoing debate. It’s one more pillar that Novak can get if he jumps ahead of Roger’s 103. It’s like, ‘Oh! Well, Novak’s got him on that checkmark, too.’

Sam Querrey added

Djokovic also expressed his wish to retire at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. Following his 2024 Paris Olympics win over Alcaraz, Djokovic has time and again stated that he wants to aim for his second gold medal in Los Angeles.
