Fans slammed British media personality Piers Morgan after he claimed that Lionel Messi is not even the greatest Argentinian player of all time. Morgan’s old receipts, where he had hailed the Inter Miami star to be the ‘best player’, resurfaced on social media. 

Lionel Messi was recently presented a special award by Spanish media outlet MARCA for being the most decorated player in football history. The Argentinian skipper has won a record 46 titles with both club and country, which include a FIFA World Cup, two Copa Americas, twelve league titles, and four UCLs.

A subsequent poll, conducted by MARCA, named the 37-year-old star as the greatest player of all time, ahead of arch-rival Cristiano Ronaldo, who came in second, and Brazilian legend Pele. Piers Morgan, who happens to be a fierce and outspoken critic of the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner, took the opportunity to take a dig at Messi.

This, however, did not stand well with football fans. In fact, Morgan has previously claimed that he considers 1986 World Cup winner Diego Maradona the greatest Argentinian footballer, while taking a dig at Messi & Co.’s 2022 World Cup-winning parade in Buenos Aires.

Morgan is known for his controversial statements on several football stars and is often considered to be a fan of Al-Nassr star Ronaldo. In a follow-up tweet, he shared his personal ranking of the top three players, with Cristiano on top, followed by Brazilian legend Ronaldo Nazario and Maradona.

Piers Morgan’s recent criticism of Lionel Messi, who has been voted as the greatest footballer of all time, has been slammed by fans. They shared old receipts of the British journalist’s praise for the Argentinian forward, as well as his claims of Messi being the best player of all time.

Fans shared old newspaper cutouts of him criticizing Cristiano Ronaldo in the past, also labeling him as a spoiled brat. One fan shared Morgan’s 2011 tweet, where he claimed Messi to be the best player ever. Another fan shared a 2012 tweet where the Englishman called the Messi-Ronaldo debate ‘superfluous’. 

Some other fans reacted to his response by stating that the Portuguese skipper, following his recent displays, would not even make it among the top ten players of all time. Another fan referred to Morgan as a ‘failed troll’.
