After a historic sweep of the St. Louis Cardinals, the Pittsburgh Pirates got swept on Sunday at the hands of the Seattle Mariners. The team once again failed to provide any run support to Paul Skenes and ended up losing the game 1-0, wasting another top performance from the pitcher.
Just before this 3-game series against the Mariners, the Pirates stunned the Cardinals. The most impressive thing about that sweep was the fact that they did not concede a single run. In that series against the Cardinals, they scored 13 runs and had 3 successive shutouts.
This also took place after they swept the New York Mets and outscored them 30-4. So what could go wrong against the Mariners? Well, their offense got shut down once again.
One massive issue for the Pirates this year has been the lack of run support for Skenes. The 2023 No.1 draft pick has been in fine form throughout the year. However, without any run support, he has ended up losing several games.
The game on Sunday highlighted this problem once again. He threw 5 scoreless innings and picked up 10 strikeouts. By the time he left the mound, he had lowered his ERA to 1.94 for the season.
In the 6th inning, Carmen Mlodzinski, who took over from Skenes, conceded a solo home run to Randy Arozarena. This home run from the Mariners was the only run of this game as the Pirates ended up losing 1-0.

In the 19 games he has started this year, Skenes has a 4-7 record. While statistically it looks very bad for an ace pitcher, however, the reality is that the Pirates have just failed to back him up with some runs on the board.
Social media reacts to Paul Skenes’ performance going in vain as Pirates lose 1-0
Paul Skenes had another impressive showing from the mound on Sunday. The 23-year-old pitched 5 scoreless innings and managed to pick up 10 strikeouts in just 78 pitches. Despite this showing, the Pittsburgh Pirates were unable to avoid losing.

MLB fans on social media would lose it as the Pirates let down Skenes once again. Many of them, including the Pirates fans themselves, took shots at the team and hoped for him to be traded away. One user wrote, “He deserves so much better” while expressing to see the day he gets traded.
Check out that and some other reactions from X below:
As a Pirates fan, I can’t wait until they trade him. Doing nothing but wasting his career with this trash organization. He deserves so much better

Even if some other teams weren't going to load up a Brinks truck for him, I'd be out of there if I was him. To pitch this well and get almost no run support pretty much every start is absolutely criminal.

He needs to go to a decent team.

Poor guy puts in major work week in and week out only to be rewarded with a goose egg from the offense on multiple occasions

Free him from this joke franchise lol

Speaking of the Pirates’ offense in this game, the team mustered just 5 hits. Apart from that, they recorded 13 strikeouts, the most they had in any defeat this season.
Paul Skenes earns 2nd straight All-Star Game nod
While Sunday might not have ended the way Paul Skenes would have hoped for, he did receive some good news. The league on Sunday revealed the reserves for the upcoming All-Star Game. Skenes earned his 2nd straight ASG game nod and will be part of the National League team.

Last year, Skenes started the game for the NL. While he only pitched one inning, he started that game as a rookie.
He thus became the first Pirates pitcher to start the All-Star Game since Jerry Reuss did in 1975. He also became the first rookie pitcher since Hideo Nomo from the Los Angeles Dodgers to start this traditional game. Nomo accomplished this feat in the 1995 game.

This year, the ASG will be played at Truist Park, home of the Atlanta Braves, on July 15th. The NL does not have the record on their side as they have lost 9 out of the last 10 ASG games against the American League.
