Monty Williams

The Detroit Pistons have fired head coach Monty Williams after just one season, despite having five years remaining on his $78 million contract. The decision came from the ownership level, with Tom Gores and Arn Tellem advocating for Williams’ dismissal.

New president of basketball operations Trajan Langdon, who was hired a month ago, delivered the news to Monty Williams on Wednesday morning. Williams was hired by the Pistons last year to lead their rebuild, but the team struggled to a league-worst 14-68 record and tied an NBA record with a 28-game losing streak

Despite having a strong relationship with former general manager Troy Weaver, Williams was unable to turn the team around. The Pistons now face a challenging coaching search, with the draft and free agency looming.

They have the No. 5 pick in the upcoming draft and will be competing with the Los Angeles Lakers and Cleveland Cavaliers, who are also searching for new head coaches. The Pistons have been the worst team in the league over the past five seasons, with a record of 94-290.

Monty Williams has a strong coaching pedigree, having led the Phoenix Suns to the NBA Finals in 2021-22 and earning a playoff appearance with the New Orleans Pelicans. His dismissal is a significant move for the Pistons, who will now look to find a new leader to guide their young team.
