On Sunday, The Super Bowl XLII ring of Plaxico Burress became the second-most expensive Super Bowl ring ever auctioned, selling for a whopping $280,600. The sale was held by Heritage Auctions as a part of the 2025 Winter Platinum Night Sports Auction.

The Super Bowl XLII is remembered for many reasons and hailed as one of the best Super Bowls in the past two and half decades. The New York Giants sealed a scintillating victory over the New England Patriots at the State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona. Burness etched his name onto the echelons of Giants history when he capped off a 12-play, 83-yard drive with the game-winning touchdown.

The championship ring was authenticated on November 16, 2023. Burress himself provided a signed letter confirming its authenticity. In the letter, he explicitly stated that the ring was the original and only one he had received as a member of the title-winning team.

I received this actual ring as a member of the New York Giants who won Super Bowl XLII held February 3, 2008, against the New England Patriots in Phoenix, AZ. I further certify this ring is the one and only ring and that no duplicate copies were produced.

The ring was put up for auction earlier this month, coinciding with the Super Bowl season. While the seller remained anonymous, the timing of the authentication letter strongly suggested that Burress himself had parted ways with the ring months before the auction. Heritage Auctions’ Sports Director, Chris Ivy, noted that the sale likely took place in 2024.

With a final price of $280,600, Burress’ Super Bowl ring became one of the most valuable ever sold. The most expensive auctioned-off ring is the Super Bowl V ring awarded to former Baltimore Colts head coach Don McCafferty, which fetched $300,000 at an auction in 2022.

Plaxico Burress faced critical financial troubles following his retirement

Despite his Super Bowl triumph, Burress’ career took a dramatic turn when he was convicted of attempted weapon possession in 2009. He served a 20-month prison sentence, a setback that significantly impacted his professional trajectory. Upon his release, he struggled to regain his former success in the NFL.

His challenges extended beyond the field. According to the New York Post, Burress faced significant financial difficulties after retiring. In 2015, he was accused of attempting to evade $46,000 in state taxes from his 2013 earnings of $1 million by issuing a bad check and making an unsuccessful electronic transfer.

His financial troubles also extended to real estate. In 2005, Burress purchased a 5,500-square-foot home in Totowa, New Jersey, for $1.5 million. However, by 2018, he had stopped making mortgage payments, leading to foreclosure proceedings. Fortunately, the matter was resolved in February 2021 after a settlement with the bank.

Burress’ journey reflects the highs and lows of professional sports, from championship glory to personal and financial struggles.
