“Players were being Lied To and Brainwashed” Vasek Pospisil reveals behind-the-scenes “dirty politics” being practiced by the ATP
Vasek Pospisil
Vasek Pospisil and Novak Djokovic took the much awaited step in the tennis community. They, along a handful of players, separated from the already existing ATP council to form a new organisation.
This association is the Professional Tennis Players Association or the PTPA. While the aforementioned organisations aim to achieve the same goal, i.e, benefit the players, they’re both likely to take different routes to do so. In addition, PTPA includes the players from both the WTA and ATP.
While some believe that this change could’ve come sooner, the likes of Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal have ‘called for unity.’ They’ve expressed that such divisions will only drive attention away from the main issues.
Pospisil re-iterates the importance of this independent players’ organisation
In an appearance on the podcast with Baseline, Pospisil shed light on the workings which finally pushed some of the players to take this serious leap and form a new council.
The Canadian has distanced himself away from the ATP council. He has gone on record to state that this organisation is “not for all” the players. He’s voiced that players who did not belong to the ‘Elite Group’ were treated unfairly.
Moreover, Pospisil added, “I’m a man of principle. When I could see how things were being run. A lot of times dirty politics and most players were being lied to and brainwashed. It needs to be cleaned up. Reality is that it’s hurting the players.”
Inspite of taking such a drastic step, Pospisil and Nole were nominated by the players to re-join the ATP Players council. However, a new rule prevents any player from being a part of two active organisations simultaneously. It only goes to show that the ATP did not take kindly to their rebellion.
