On Thursday, the Cardinals (not the MLB’s ones) made a major announcement. With white smoke emerging from the Sistine Chapel, they announced Chicago native Robert Prevost (officially known as Pope Leo XIV) as the new pope. Following this announcement, the Chicago White Sox took a hilarious swipe at their city rivals, the Chicago Cubs.

Pope Leo XIV became the new head of the Catholic Church after the passing of Pope Francis. The former sovereign of the Vatican City State served as the head from March 2013 till his death in April 2025. Pope Francis passed away at the age of 88 following a cerebral stroke, which led to a coma and then an irreversible heart attack.

Following his passing, the big question on the minds of several people was, who would be the new Pope? After weeks of speculation, Robert Prevost known as Pope Leo XIV was named as the new head of the Catholic Church.

After he was elected the 267th Pope, the Chicago Cubs shared a congratulation tweet. The National League side shared an image of their home stadium, Wrigley Field, with a message, “HEY CHICAGO. HE’S A CUBS FAN!” on the board and claimed that he was a Cubs fan.

The White Sox then came in and took a hilarious swipe at them. The American League team shared a video of Pope Leo XIV’s brother, John Prevost, who claimed that he (Pope Leo XIV) was always a Sox fan and he was never a Cubs fan.

Apart from that video, the White Sox also shared an image of their home field, Rate Field, with a similar message like the Cubs but with a different ending.

HEY CHICAGO. HE’S A SOX FAN!

Chicago White Sox wrote in their message

Is Pope Leo XIV really a fan of the Chicago White Sox?

History was scripted on Thursday as Robert Prevost (Pope Leo XIV) became the first American-born Pope. The Chicago-native was elected as the new head and named as the successor of Pope Francis. Following his election, some sports fans were wondering with which team his loyalties lie.

After the interview of his brother went viral, claiming that he is a Chicago White Sox fan, an image of him attending a White Sox game has surfaced on social media. In a photo shared by the Chicago Sun-Times, Pope Leo XIV was seen attending the 2005 World Series against the Houston Astros at the Rate Field.

These images of Pope Leo XIV could signal that he indeed is a White Sox fan. At the moment, only he can clear the air on this situation.

As for the 2005 World Series, the White Sox swept the Astros. This saw them win their first World Series in 88 years and their third overall.

LA Angels star jokes that Pope Leo XIV is not a fan of either Chicago-based teams

In the celebration of the new Pope being elected, a question of which team Pope Leo XIV supports came up. While the debate regarding whether he roots for the White Sox or the Cubs continue, a Los Angeles Angels joked that Pope Leo XIV is not a fan of either of the Chicago-based teams.

While speaking with the MLB Network crew following their 8-5 loss against the Toronto Blue Jays, Zach Neto was asked on what he thought about which team the new Pope supported. The Angels star joked that he could be a fan of his team.

Yeah, I don’t think he’s a fan of any of them. I think he’s a fan of the Angels. We got beautiful weather here in California. Beautiful ballpark, beautiful fans, and you know, it’s just a great time every time you come here and rep the Angels.

Speaking of the LA Angels, their 8-5 loss on Thursday saw them miss the chance to sweep the Blue Jays. The AL team will now take on the Baltimore Orioles, who have struggled so far in the 2025 season.
