The main draw of the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix, also known as the Stuttgart Open began on Monday (April 14). The WTA 500 tournament features huge names vying for the opening title of the European clay court season. 28 players, including 4 qualifiers and 4 wildcards will feature at the tournament.
Defending champion Elena Rybakina will not feature at the tournament after opting to represent Kazakhstan at the Billie Jean King Cup qualifiers. The Grand Slam winner hasn’t been at her best this season and is set to drop from the Top 10 after the tournament. However, top seed Aryna Sabalenka, who has finished as a finalist thrice, now has a chance to win the title.
She will face the winner between Anastasia Potapova and Clara Tauson in the second round. Tauson is the favorite to win and she defeated Sabalenka at the Dubai Tennis Championships in February. After that, Sabalenka would likely face Diana Shnaider in the quarter-finals before a potential matchup against Coco Gauff in the semi-final.
Gauff, who is yet to win a title this season snubbed the Billie Jean King Cup duty for Stuttgart Open. The American heads up in the second quarter of the draw and will face fellow compatriot Danielle Collins in the second round of the tournament. With a win over Collins, she will take on Jasmine Paolini in the quarter-finals.
Paolini enters Porsche Tennis with a different outlook after hiring Rafael Nadal’s ex-coach Marc Lopez. The Italian is seeking to regain her form this season and is seemingly searching for fresh impetus. She will play 2024 Wimbledon quarter-finalist Eva Lys in the first round before a potential tie against Laura Siegemund in the second round.
Jessica Pegula, who is making her debut leads the third quarter of the draw. She could face Indian Wells champion Mirra Andreeva in the quarter-final. Pegula arrived in Stuttgart after winning the Charleston Open and leads the tour with the highest match win of the season after claiming the Austin title and reaching the Miami Open final.
Iga Swiatek sits at the bottom of the draw. She has only lost one of her last eleven matches in Stuttgart. That came against Elena Rybakina in the semi-finals last year. She will be seeking to win the title and faces a potential opener against Donna Vekic. After that, she will face either Jelena Ostapenko or Emma Navarro in the last eight. If she reaches the final, she has a potential clash against Sabalenka.
Porsche Tennis Grand Prix schedule

Madison Keys is a notable absence from the Stuttgart Open. The Australian Open champion has opted to take a rest and focus on the upcoming WTA 1000 Madrid Open. Also, Ons Jabeur and Qinwen Zheng were the two stars to withdraw from the tournament, while Paula Badosa withdrew earlier after suffering a back injury. Meanwhile, Elena Rybakina, the defending champion, will drop 500 points for failing to defend it.
Iga Swiatek and Aryna Sabalenka are two strong favorites to win the tournament. Sabalenka is in considerably better form than the World No.2, having won the Miami Open and having lost just one of her last twelve matches.
