Premier League 2020/21 : Chelsea vs West Bromwich Albion Match Report

West Bromwich Albion defeated Chelsea by a remarkable five goals to two in the Premier League. This is Thomas Tuchel’s first defeat as in charge of Chelsea boss and also the first time that they have conceded at home , Stamford Bridge. An absolutely humiliating defeat for the Blues who will have to bounce back quickly.

First Half

Chelsea had a number of changes to their starting line up. Thiago Silva who was missing since February came back into the side with Christian Pulisic also getting a rare start.

The blues started off extremely poorly with sloppy passing and it was clear that the international break had affected the players. However West Bromwich Albion on the other hand looked fresh and their players seemed more hungry for the win.

Thiago Silva got a yellow card after defending against a poor back pass from Jorginho. But Chelsea luckily managed to get the lead through Christian Pulisic. Marcos Alonso took a wonderful curled free kick and goalkeeper Johnstone did well to keep out the initial effort. But the rebound fell into the feet of Pulisic who tucked it in.

But Chelsea’s worries had not started yet. Just seconds later yet another mistake at the back and Thiago Silva put in an unnecessary challenge just at the edge of the box. This was enough for a second yellow card and off he went reducing Chelsea to ten men. Andreas Christensen came on to replace the Brazilian defender.

West Bromwich Albion kept on applying pressure and they finally reaped dividends in added time. Matheus Pereira latched on to Sam Johnstone’s long ball and dinked it over Edouard Mendy.

Minutes later Pereira doubled the lead as Chelsea drew problems on them. Jorginho who had a dismal and pathetic first half once again was at fault for the goal.

Second Half

Thomas Tuchel made one change to his side as Christian Pulisic came off to be replaced by Mason Mount. Quite a poor decision that as taking off Jorginho who would’ve been the better choice.

Things got even worse for Chelsea as Callum Robinson scored a third for West Bromwich Albion and put an end to the game. Callum Robinson struck a perfect volley past Eduoard Mendy after a lovely through ball by Darnell Furlong.

West Bromwich Albion put the final icing on the cake with a fourth just minutes later. Matheus Pereira cut the ball back to Mbaye Diagne, who eased it into the bottom corner.

Mason Mount scored a consolation goal in the 71sr minute as he tapped in the ball from Timo Werner’s unselfish cross. Callum Robinson scored his second and WBA’s fifth after a lovely dink over a despairing Eduoard Mendy.
