Premier League: 3 talking points of Liverpool v Sheffield United
Liverpool came from behind to attain a victory over struggling Sheffield United. Sander Berge scored a controversial penalty for Sheffield while Roberto Firmino and Diogo Jota scored in both the halves to ensure victory for Liverpool. Read on to know about the three talking points of the match.
Joe Gomez
Joe Gomez continued his rich vein of form against Ajax into this match too. His partnership with Virgil Van Dijk was much reason for Liverpool’s profound success as the duo became one of the most coveted centre-back pairings. Against Sheffield United Joe Gomez had stats of 94% pass accuracy, 12/12 accurate long passes, 5/7 ground duels won, 6/13 aerial duels won, 8 clearances and 2 interceptions. With Virgil Van Dijk set to be out for 8 months, Joe Gomez has to lead the backline. He is more than capable of doing this.
Diogo Jota
Not many players have forced Jurgen Klopp to make a formation change to accommodate a certain player. He prefers his 4-3-3 as it is stable in terms of defence and attack. Enter Diogo Jota from Wolves, a sensational player by his own right. The scouts at Liverpool had listed Jota as a potential signing two years ago and as it has proven in recent times, they weren’t wrong. They have unearthed yet another gem akin to Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane. Jota has been lively whenever he plays, agile and quick, talented in dribbling and a vision for the goal. He makes things look effortless as he charges at a defender and throws them off by moving left and right.
He’s the first Liverpool to score goals in the first two home matches of his career. In this match he scored the winning goal for Liverpool and ensured three points were theirs. Jota is one for the future and one can only be excited for the levels of superstardom he can reach. His partnership with Takumi Minamino is to be watched as they proved to have a good connection against Ajax.
VAR (yet again)
2 terrible decisions against Liverpool in the Everton match and one here. The referees must decide when and where to use VAR and be consistent. The concept of VAR is to review offences that the ground referees aren’t able to spot and assist them in punishing fouls. However VAR has proved to be doing the opposite of it as even the most blatant of fouls are going unpunished. Jordan Pickford’s reckless lunge at Virgil Van Dijk went unpunished as Van Dijk was offside and the VAR official had forgotten to check it. In this match Fabinho made a correct tackle and played the ball first and yet a penalty was given. VAR can be used to find offsides by the finest of margins and yet not find fouls? The standard of refereeing needs to be improved drastically.
