Premier League: Chelsea vs Aston Villa Player Ratings as Lukaku brace gives Chelsea a resounding win
Premier League: Chelsea vs Aston Villa
Chelsea got a comprehensive 3-0 victory against a tough Villa side as they succeed in getting the win despite looking like the second-best side during some moments. Lukaku’s home debut in his second spell could not have gone better as the striker picked up a brace thanks to two beautiful strikes. Kovacic dropped a MOTM performance with a goal and an assist.
Chelsea started the first half really well, and almost got the lead early as a Hudson-Odoi cross hit the woodwork. But they were rewarded when Kovacic made an incredible break in the play and set Lukaku sweetly for his first Stamford Bridge goal. But after the goal, Villa well and truly got back into the game as Watkins came close and Villa were unlucky to not find an equalizer in the first 45 minutes.
The second half started with Villa trying to penetrate the Chelsea defense but Mings’ gift to Kovacic at the 50th minute mark more or less sealed the game then and there. Jorginho’s entry in place of Saul made sure Chelsea held possession, and in the dying minutes of the game, Lukaku got his second as his powerful shot easily found the net, to give Chelsea a resounding victory.
Player Ratings:
Chelsea
Edouard Mendy: 8/10
Great performance from Chelsea’s first choice as he had answers to every question that Villa asked in the game, and looked comfortable guarding the goal.
Trevoh Chalobah: 7/10
A very cool and calm outing for the Cobham graduate as Chalobah played the ball from the back really well and his challenges on the Villa attackers proved important.
Thiago Silva: 8/10
Thiago Silva dropped another masterclass as his efforts in the box were a major part of the win, and his block off Watkins was definitely the most important.
Antonio Rudiger: 8/10
A big performance from on of the most in-form players in the world currently, as Rudiger’s flawless defending gave Chelsea the confidence in the middle.
Callum Hudson-Odoi: 6/10
Had a difficult game tracking back as he was playing in place of Reece James’ RWB position, but showed promise when he was given the left flank later on.
Saul Niguez: 5/10
A disappointing debut for Saul as he lacked a lot physically, and could not show his technical abilities also, as he was subbed off at the break.
Mateo Kovacic: 9/10
Definitely the Man of the Match, as Kovacic delivered an assist with a beautiful pass after a massive break in possession from himself, scored the goal that sealed the win, and was the pivotal piece of the team.
Marcos Alonso: 6/10
Alonso delivered a massive performance at the back as he was pivotal in containing that flank, and was influential also considering he started the game as the captain.
Hakim Ziyech: 6/10
Ziyech was busy in the game and was also keeping all the defenders busy with his dribbles and crosses, but they were not up to the point.
Kai Havertz: 6/10
Had a silent but decent game as he did pretty much that was expected after coming from international involvement, as picked the pockets well.
Romelu Lukaku: 9/10
One of the best, if not the best, in the evening as his killer instinct gave Chelsea a resounding victory. Lukaku now has three goals in three games for the Blues.
Substitutes
Jorginho: 8/10
This substitution proved to be the game-changer as Jorginho replaced the struggling Saul and dominated the game right from the first minute of the second half.
Cesar Azpilicueta: 7/10
Gave the Blues instant surety of the win as Azpilicueta was sent to contain the lead and he did really well and even add an assist to his name.
Timo Werner: NA
Aston Villa
Jed Steer: 6/10
Steer tried his best to make most of the chance that he got due to unavailability of Emi Martinez but could not impress a lot.
Matty Cash: 7/10
Cash had a difficult game as expected as he had to come up against a fiery left flank of Chelsea with all their attacks coming from this side.
Ezri Konsa: 7/10
Konsa was the best defender out of the three and did his best to not let the Chelsea players have any pockets of space.
Tyrone Mings: 5/10
Mings had a good game only until his back-pass gifted Chelsea their second which potentially sealed the game and Villa lost hope.
Axel Tuanzebe: 6/10
Tuanzebe had a good match although they conceded three in the game, but it does not portray whole story of the defense.
Matt Targett: 6/10
Targett did well to contain the right flank of the Chelsea attackers and also put in some decent balls in the box, but failed to create a clear chance.
John McGinn: 8/10
McGinn has to be the best Villa player on the pitch as he was an engine for the team, winning possession and creating a lot of half chances.
Douglas Luiz: 6/10
A very silent game for Luiz and he would also be disappointed not to hit any shot on target despite getting a lot of chances just outside the box.
Jacob Ramsey: 7/10
Looked really dangerous on the ball and definitely one of the two best Villa players from the first half as the youngster really made a name.
Ollie Watkins: 6/10
The livelier of the two strikers up front for Villa but Watkins would be disappointed not to score as he got a very good chance in the first half.
Danny Ings: 5/10
A disappointing outing for an otherwise in-form striker as he could not make any chances for himself and struggled to influence.
Substitutes
Leon Bailey: 7/10
Looked really good in the right flank with his fiery dribbles and pace, but could not break down the Chelsea defense.
Bertrand Traore: 6/10
Traore came in to put some pressure on Chelsea, and had some good moments too, but failed to put any considerable impact.
Marvelous Nakamba: NA
