Premier League: Liverpool vs Burnley Player Ratings as the Reds win at the Anfield

Liverpool vs Burnley

Diogo Jota and Sadio mane were on the scoresheet as Liverpool completed an impressive 2-0 win over a hapless Burnley. Marked by the return of Virgil van Dijk and a full debut for Harvey Elliot, Liverpool was the better team against a lacklustre Burnley.

That said, let’s take a look at how each player performed on the day.

Liverpool Player Ratings

Virgil van Dijk
Virgil van Dijk won the Champions League in his first full season with Liverpool

Alisson – 6.5

Alisson didn’t have much to do in the second half. He did make a couple of crucial saves in the first half, especially from Dwight McNeil.

Trent Alexander-Arnold – 7

The England international had a solid game and was seemingly back to his attacking best. He was involved in the two goals scored while taking up important attacking positions.

Joel Matip – 6

Didn’t have much to do apart from thwarting the attacking impetus of Ashley Barnes and Chris Wood. Matip posed a significant danger from set-pieces and corners.

Virgil van Dijk – 7.5

He impressed on his return to Anfield after almost a year out of the game. His presence in the heart of defence was telling and threatened with his height and physique from set-pieces. The Dutch international is seemingly back to his best in a Liverpool shirt.

Kostas Tsimikas – 9

The Greek international had a dream game at left-back. Tsimikas assisted Diogo Jota’s first goal of the game and took the corners from the left flank. He has cemented his place in the side at left-back until the return of Andy Robertson.

Harvey Elliot – 9

The youngster impressed on his full debut for Liverpool. Playing on the left side of central midfield, Elliot linked well with Salah and managed to pick crucial passes. The man of the match despite not scoring a goal.

Jordan Henderson – 8

The skipper came good as he usually is and marshalled the midfield as well as ever. Henderson impressed one and all by playing the quarterback role in the heart of midfield.

Naby Keita – 6

Keita didn’t have the impact he would have liked but posed a danger nonetheless. His long-range effort in the first half almost forced a save Nick Pope.

Mohamed Salah – 8

Salah had his goal disallowed but assisted Sadio mane’s goal. However, the Egypt international linked up well with Harvey Elliot and Trent Alexander-Arnold while creating problems for Charlie Taylor and Dwight McNeil.

Diogo Jota – 8.5

Jota started the game ahead of Roberto Firmino and created problems right through the first half for Ben mee and James Tarkowski. Jota scored the first goal of the game when he headed in a cross from Kostas Tsimikas.

Sadio Mane – 8

Scored Liverpool’s second goal after linking up well with Jota, Salah, and Elliot. His work rate was as impressive as ever and was replaced by Roberto Firmino in the second half.

Substitutes

Roberto Firmino – N/A

Came on late in the game to make any kind of an impact. Had one shot at Nick Pope, but a feeble one at that.

Thiago Alcantara – N/A

Replaced Naby Keita in the final few minutes of the game.

Joe Gomez – N/A

Came on in the final minutes of the game for Tsimikas.

Burnley Player Ratings

Burnley

Nick Pope – 6

Made a few impressive saves and managed set pieces quite well. However, Pope was let down by his central defenders.

Matthew Lowton – 5.5

Showed a bit of attacking impetus in the first half and crossed the ball for Ashely Barnes who found the back of the net. However, found it difficult to deal with Liverpool’s left-back Tsimikas.

James Tarkowski – 5

A rare poor game for Tarkowski who found it hard to deal with Diogo Jota and Sadio Mane. Provided very little in terms of threat from set-pieces for Burnley.

Ben Mee – 5

Mee was at fault for the first Liverpool goal in which he failed to track the run of Diogo Jota. He came close to scoring towards injury time.

Charlie Taylor – 4.5

Had a poor game and found it difficult to deal with Harvey Elliot and Mohamed Salah.

Dwight McNeil – 7

McNeil was easily the best player on display for Burnley on the day. However, his attacking impetus in the second half was a bit shunted by the presence of Alexander-Arnold

Josh Brownhill – 6

Made a few impressive tackles, but found it hard to contend with Jordan Henderson and Harvey Elliott.

Jack Cork – 6

Similar to Brownhill, Jack Cork found it difficult to penetrate through the midfield for Burnley. He managed one shot on target for his team.

Jóhann Berg Guðmundsson – 4.5

The Iceland international was seemingly non-visible in both halves and failed to penetrate the Liverpool half and get past Tsimikas. Was substituted by Erik Pieters towards the end of the game.

Chris Wood – 4

The Kiwi striker failed to impose himself on the game as he had done in the previous season. Was substituted in the second half for Jay Rodriguez.

Ashley Barnes – 4

Came close to scoring early in the second half where he found the back of the net only to be flagged offside.

Substitutes

Jay Rodriguez – 6

Found himself with a few chances in the second half and towards the end of the game. However, he had very few minutes to make any tangible impact.

Erik Pieters – 5
