Liverpool defeated Southampton FC by four goals to nil in the Premier League on Saturday night (4-0). The hosts opened the scoring with Diego Jota in the first two minutes with Thiago amd Jota scoring again in the first half. Virgil Van Dijk got a fourth in the second half to completely blow away Ralph Hassenhuttl’s Southampton.
Here are the player ratings:-
Liverpool
Allison (7/10)- The Brazilian goalkeeper pulled off a fine save in the first half. A good low block to stop the youngster from squeezing the ball in. He was called into action again with a fine save off Armstrong’s shot.
Trent Alexander Arnold (6.5/10)- Trent Alexander Arnold was decent in today’s game. However he will be disappointed he couldn’t get a goal contribution in such a wide open match.
Andy Robertson (7.5/10)- The Scottish left back got quickly into the action with an early assist. Liverpool kept the pressure on and Robertson chipped in a precise ball for Jota to finish. He was a constant presence in the left side.
Ibrahim Konate (7/10)- The defender did extremely well in the early minutes of the second half to dive in and block Armstrong’s shot. Overall he was solid in defence tonight.
Virgil Van Dijk (7.5/10)- The Dutchman quickly got into the action and scored Liverpool’s fourth of the game. A smart finish from close range after the corner kick past a haples McCarthy.
Jordan Henderson (6.5/10)- Jordan Henderson played a vital role in the middle of the park tonight. He played a lovely interchange with Mohammad Salah after which Diego Jota was released.
Thiago (7.5/10)- The Spanish midfielder’s golden form continues as he finds the net yet again for Liverpool. Although it took a heavy deflection on its way, it was a good attempt from the edge of the box.
Fabinho (7/10)- Fabinho put in a good show tonight with his defensive duties. He was good in the defensive aspect and stopped Southampton attacks from the middle.
Sadio Mane (7.5/10)- The Senegalese international went close to scoring early on after the cross by Robertson. Moreover he was also called offside in one effort after the delivery by the left back.
Mohammad Salah (7.5/10)- The Egyptian king got into the act quickly as he played a lovely delivery down the middle which was converted by Diego Jota. His second half effort was cleared away by Salisu.
Diego Jota(8.5/10)- The Portuguese international was in full flow today as he scored the fastest opening goal of the season at just 97 seconds. Andy Robertson delivered the cross and Jota finished it off. He then doubled his tally after making the run off Salah’s ball.
Substitutes
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (6.5/10)- The English international was given a lot of playing time today. He replaced the goalscorer Thiago and enjoyed 30 minutes plus on the field.
James Milner (6/10)- James Milner was brought on in place of Jordan Henderson late on. He enjoyed some relaxing playing time.Takumi Minamino- NA
Southampton
Alex McCarthy (6/10)- The goalkeeper was called into action several times throughout the game. He couldn’t stop the influx of goals but still managed to make some fine saves in the first half.
Lyanco (5.5/10)- Lyanco was playing in the middle of the defence today for Southampton FC. He was constantly under pressure and couldn’t dominate over the Liverpool forwards.
Mohammed Salisu (6/10)- The defender put in a good block which could’ve well been Liverpool’s fifth goal. Mohammad Salah curled in an effort and Salisu headed away for a corner.
Jan Bednarek(5/10)- The big defender got into trouble early on itself as he received a booking in the 11th minute. A bad challenge on Sadio Mane which could’ve been nasty.
Oriol Romeu (5.5/10)- Oriol Romeu couldn’t connect well with the forwards tonight. He was completely nullified in the midfield and played some clumsy balls.
James Ward-Prowse (5.5/10)- The Southampton midfielder was completely blocked off today. He gave no creative output and was stopped by the Liverpool defence.
Romain Perraud ( 5/10)- Perraud had a tough time today on the field and was completely overrun by the Liverpool fullbacks. He was substituted late on by Kyle Walker Peters.
Valentino Livramento (6/10)- Tino Livramento was put under considerable pressure in the initial minutes. However he slowly managed to recover in the game and put in some fine crosses.
Ché Adams (5/10)- The forward had a miserable time in the first half and could hardly get involved. Hence he was rightly substituted at the halfway break with Tella coming on.
Adam Armstrong (6/10)- Armstrong called Allison into action late on in the first half. A fine low shot into the bottom corner which was palmed out.
Armando Broja (6/10)- The Chelsea loanee had the golden opportunity to score in the first half but was denied by Allison. He was through on goal but Allison managed to close down the angle.
Substitutes
Nathan Tella (5/10)- The forward was brought on in place of Che Adams. However he too couldn’t make much of an impact.
Nathan Redmond (5.5/10) – The striker came on in the second half. He made some runs into dangerous areas but didn’t any good shot on target.
