A viral video of Premier League referee David Coote taking aim at former Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp took the internet by storm on Monday. The match official was captured calling Klopp ‘a c***‘ while also throwing racial abuse at the German.
Besides immediately being suspended until further investigation, several other developments hint that his career may have come to an end. The UEFA have dropped the 42-year-old from upcoming Nations League fixtures.
Coote, who has been a Premier League referee since 2018, most recently carried out VAR duties for the game between PSV Eindhoven and Girona. Former Premier League referee Mike Dean, however, spoke with reservation about the ‘unique’ situation.

Social media has been divided on the issue, with many claiming that it is ‘normal’ for officials to speak their minds behind closed doors. On the other hand, several other fans have stated that he shouldn’t be allowed to officiate a game again.
David Coote set to aggravated misconduct charges following Jurgen Klopp rant
After being dropped by UEFA and suspended by PGMOL, Premier League referee David Coote now risks being charged with aggravated misconduct. According to the current rules of the Football Association, an aggravated breach pertains to an explicit or implied reference to an individual’s ‘race, color, ethnic origin or nationality.’
A review of Coote’s viral video shows that the official took aim at Jurgen Klopp, calling him a German ‘c***‘. Involving the former Liverpool manager’s nationality may not be good news for him.
Fans and PGMOL aren’t looking to let the issue die down without a proper resolution. Several Liverpool fans have since pointed out various refereeing decisions as instances of clear ‘bias’ by Coote.

With the issue gaining global significance, the question of whether referees should hold back from supporting a particular club comes into question. While La Liga officials and even its president Javier Tebas have taken the side of a particular club in the past, there are various opinions on the issue and it is difficult to reach a consensus.
