President Donald Trump intends to keep each of his promises, and as a result, he will be signing an executive order that bans the participation of transgender athletes in sports.

As per the order, those assigned male gender at birth will be unable to participate in women’s and girls’ sporting events. This takes a step to bring back fairness in sports. The order is to be signed at an afternoon ceremony today and is his second push against transgender people and their rights. The first was Donald Trump‘s declaration that there exist only two genders in the U.S.A., male and female.

He has made it mandatory to define sex as either male or female on official documents issued by the government, such as passports, and while assigning cells in federal prisons. The criticism against men in women’s sports grew after the Imane Khalif debacle in the Olympics. As some reports suggested her to be a transgender competing in women’s boxing, it infuriated her opponents and die-hard fans of the sport.

The President found that this cause widely resonated with his party workers and the vote bank. A sentiment had emerged that the support for transgender rights under the Biden-Harris administration had gone too far. The order will be signed on the same day National Girls and Women in Sports are celebrated.

His new order puts Title IX, the law responsible for ensuring gender equity in athletics and preventing sexual harassment on campuses in jeopardy. It remains to be seen how he intends to restructure it. However, he should be expected to take a traditional approach as opposed to the last administration. Joe Biden had introduced a policy that protected the rights of LGBTQ+ students by federal law while providing safeguards for victims of sexual assault.

The NCAA hopes that President Trump’s order will issue clarity on a subject that remains ambiguous. NCAA President Charlie Baker expressed the problem surrounding transgender athletes in sports earlier in January.

We do have a situation where there is no clarity on this from a legal point of view. You have federal judges ruling on individual cases. You have 26, 27 states with one set of rules- a bunch of other states with a whole other set of rules. I do think we would welcome some clarity somewhere on this so everyone has a general understanding about what the rules of the game are.

Would this mean that transgender athletes will be required to compete alongside males or if there will be a separate class introduced remains unknown.

It appears that President Trump is attempting to tackle this problem one step at a time. His first goal is to ensure that a level playing field is back across all spheres.
