“Women are not paid fair share” – President Joe Biden weighs in on Caitlin Clark contract uproar after WNBA draft
Caitlin Clark will earn $76.5K in her first year in the WNBA.
President Joe Biden asks WNBA to fix pay structure after learning of Caitlin Clark's rookie contract with Indiana Fever
As Caitlin Clark moves to the WNBA with the Indiana Fever, the most talked about aspect has been with regards to her rookie contract. The superstar will be paid a paltry $300k over 4 years. The figure has now come to the attention of the President of the United States Joe Biden.
A tweet from the official account of President Biden had this to say about the pay disparity;
Women in sports continue to push new boundaries and inspire us all. But right now we’re seeing that even if you’re the best, women are not paid their fair share. It’s time that we give our daughters the same opportunities as our sons and ensure women are paid what they deserve.
Official POTUS handle on X
President Joe Biden suggested this at the most opportune time. Clark is set to bring much more to the table than what the WNBA are paying her for. Hopefully the President’s words will force the league to change their CBA as soon as possible.
The Indiana Fever will be paying Caitlin Clark $76.5K as per the existing rookie scale. A shockingly low figure compared to the millions earned by men in their rookie year. Moreover, none of those male rookies in recent years have been able to generate the hype that Clark has done.
Hence, the President believes that she should receive compensation accordingly. Now that Joe Biden has brought in his views, it is possible that the WNBA talk to their investors and look for better revenue avenues so that they can pay their players more.
Nike rumored to offer Caitlin Clark biggest shoe deal in WNBA history
With Clark set to earn in the thousands with her new team, sports apparel giant Nike has decided to compensate their latest superstar. After their contract with Clark expired, the Athletic’s Shams Charania suggested that a new 8 figure contract is in the offing. If true, it would be the biggest shoe contract for any WNBA player in history.
New Balance and Adidas also approached Clark with deals. But it seems highly likely that she continues with the company that supported her during her college years. It is only a matter of time until the actual details of the deal come out.
But it should pave the way for women in sports to earn much more than what are currently getting. And if the WNBA manage to increase the pay scale, it could be all the better for women in sports.
