20-time Grand Slam winner Roger Federer bids an emotional farewell to his illustrious tennis career in the trailer for Asif Kapadia’s sports documentary, “Federer: Twelve Final Days,” which was released on Monday. The documentary is set to premiere globally on June 20 at the Tribeca Film Festival.

As a mark of Federer’s 24-year career in professional tennis, the trailer reveals his struggle to hold back tears. Producers describe the documentary as an intimate home video that was never meant for public viewing. In one poignant moment, the Swiss Maestro admitted that he was an emotional wreck coming into the Laver Cup 2022 as he prepares for his final tournament match.

In 2022, Federer declared his retirement from professional tennis at 41, following a knee injury during the 2021 grass court season. His final singles match ended in a straight-set loss to Hubert Hurkacz in the Wimbledon quarter-finals that year.

The trailer features insights from tennis legends such as Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, and John McEnroe. Additionally, Kapadia and co-director Joe Sabia’s cameras captured Federer’s last appearance at the Laver Cup, where he competed as a member of Team Europe.

Will Rafael Nadal follow Roger Federer into retirement in 2024 Laver Cup?

When Rafael Nadal lost to Alexander Zverev in the first round of Roland Garros, many felt it could be the King of Clay‘s last appearance on the court. However, there’s something suspicious about Nadal in 2024.

The Spaniard has announced his participation in the Laver Cup alongside compatriot Carlos Alcaraz, Zverev, and Daniil Medvedev. It’s also the final year of Bjorn Borg and John McEnroe as captains of Team Europe and Team World.

But it’s the timing that raises suspicion. Nadal was last seen at the Laver Cup bidding farewell to Roger Federer’s career, playing doubles with him before leaving due to his wife’s pregnancy.

Now, with attention on Nadal’s potential farewell, will roles reverse? Will Federer welcome his rival to retirement? Only the superstars know. After all, according to Federer, Nadal was the first outside his family to know about his retirement, suggesting a similar exchange.
