The 2025 Monte Carlo Masters is drawing toward its end. On Sunday (April 13), Carlos Alcaraz will be locking horns with Lorenzo Musetti in the final. Following the conclusion of the first Masters 1000 tournament of the season on clay, the tennis world will shift its focus to the Barcelona Open.
The tournament, founded in 1953, was a men’s and women’s event until 1980. It is the first ATP 500 tournament of the season on the red dirt. The qualifying rounds are underway on the outdoor hard courts of the Real Club de Tenis Barcelona, while the main draw is scheduled to start on April 14; and on April 20, the final will be played.
Casper Ruud, who lost to Alexei Popyrin in the fourth round of the Monte Carlo Masters, will enter the tournament as the defending champion. Last year, he avenged his 2024 Monte Carlo Masters final defeat by beating Stefanos Tsitsipas to claim the title in the Spanish city.
Ruud, who will drop No.10 in the rankings table on Monday because of his Monte Carlo Masters early exit, will be the second seed as several other top players, including Novak Djokovic, Alexander Zverev, and Daniil Medvedev, have not signed up for the event. World No.1 Jannik Sinner is not playing because of his three-month doping ban.
Alcaraz is the most successful clay-court player in Men’s tennis in recent times. The winner of eight clay-court titles will enter the tournament as the top seed. He has so far claimed two titles in his home tournament. Back in 2022, he breezed past Pablo Carreno Busta to clinch the trophy and defended his title by beating Tsitsipas the following year.
Alcaraz didn’t play last year as after withdrawing from the Monte Carlo Masters due to an injury, the Spaniard skipped the Barcelona Open as well. The 21-year-old, has so far won only the Rotterdam Open this season but he is expected to win more titles on the clay swing, including at the French Open which he won for the first time in his career by beating Zverev in five sets.
Prize money for the 2025 Barcelona Open
The total prize pool this season is $3,282,564, which is slightly more than last year’s. The winner will receive $593,657, while the runner-up will get $316,621, which is more than what Casper Ruud and Stefanos Tsitsipas took home last year.

Round of 32 | $24,742 |
Round of 16 | $45,186 |
Quarterfinals | $85,751 |
Semifinals | $164,242 |
Runner-up | $316,621 |
Champion | $593,657 |
The draw of the tournament was made on April 12. Carlos Alcaraz is projected to meet Stefanos Tsitsipas in the semifinals and Ruud in the final. The four-time Grand Slam champion could also schedule a final against Lorenzo Musetti. Apart from the aforementioned players, the other seeded players in the draw are Andrey Rublev, Alex de Minaur, Holger Rune, and Arthur Fils.
The most successful player at the Barcelona Open is Rafael Nadal, as he has won the tournament a record 12 times between 2005 and 2021. But Nadal this season won’t be playing as he bade his farewell to tennis at the 2024 Davis Cup. The 22-time Grand Slam champion is also the oldest player to become a champion in Barcelona (he was 34 in 2021), and has registered the most wins (66).
Following the conclusion of the Barcelona Open, the second Masters 1000 of the season on clay, the Madrid Open, will kick start on April 22. It will be the season’s first combined Men’s and Women’s events of the 1000 category on clay, and the third overall after Indian Wells and the Miami Open.
