The hard court swing at the start of the season ended with the conclusion of the Sunshine Double, and it’s now time for the clay swing. The 2025 Monte Carlo Masters will mark the first ATP Masters 1000 tournament on the surface.
The qualifying rounds of the 56th tour-level edition of the Masters 1000 event are underway while the main draw matches are scheduled to start on April 6 on the outdoor clay courts of the Monte Carlo Country Club in Monte Carlo, Monaco. The matches will be wrapped up on April 13.
Rafael Nadal, the most successful player on clay with 14 French Open titles, won’t be playing. The 22-time Grand Slam champion, the winner of 11 Monte Carlo Masters (the most in the tournament) bade his farewell in the Davis Cup last year.
The King of Clay had also won eight consecutive titles in Monaco from 2005 (his first) to 2012 and is also the most successful player in the tournament’s history in terms of matches won (79).
Alexander Zverev will be the top seed as World No.1 Jannik Sinner is serving his three-month doping ban from the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). Novak Djokovic, the winner of the tournament in 2013 and 2015, will continue his hunt for his 100th ATP title, as he failed to do so in the Miami Open due to a straight-set defeat to Jakub Mensik, who withdrew from the tournament.
Last year, the 24-time Grand Slam champion fell in three sets to Casper Ruud in the semifinals. If Djokovic is successful in taking home his third Monte Carlo Masters trophy, he will join Jimmy Connors and Roger Federer as the third player in ATP tennis to reach the 100-title mark. He last won a title at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Carlos Alcaraz, the second seed, has won titles on clay but never lifted the title in the principality. The 21-year-old Spaniard last played in the tournament in 2022 and withdrew from the last two editions due to injuries. Alcaraz will be entering the tournament without winning a title at either Indian Wells or the Miami Open since 2021. The four-time Grand Slam champion will be chasing his second title of the season, having won his first at the Rotterdam Open (also his first on the indoor hard court).

The Greek ace took home $990,052 while the Norwegian pocketed $540,638, which is slightly less than what the winner and the runner-up this season will receive.

There is a 3% increase in the total prize money this season as compared to last year. The total prize pool for this season is $6,717,624. The winner will pocket $1,021,255, while the runner-up will get $557,687.

Tsitsipas will be chasing his second title of the season after ending his trophy drought at the Dubai Open. Ruud, the two-time French Open finalist, hasn’t yet lifted the title in the tournament. Seventh-seed Andrey Rublev overcame Holger Rune in the 2023 Monte Carlo final.
The Monte Carlo Masters is the first of the three clay-court Masters 1000 tournaments. The other two events of the same category that won the surface are the Madrid Open and the Italian Open. It’s also one of the nine Masters 1000 of the tour.
