The Swiss Indoors is an indoor hard-court ATP 500 event, which kicked off on October 20 and will run till October 26. Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard has entered the tournament as the defending champion.

The win made him the lowest-ranked player to win the tournament. The Frenchman is an unseeded player. In the 32-player draw, nine players are the seeded ones, four played the qualifying rounds, while three have received the wild card.

Taylor Fritz, the first seed, is scheduled to lock horns with reigning Shanghai Masters champion Valentin Vacherot in the first round. The 2024 US Open runner-up has never reached the final here in singles.

But he played the final in doubles along with compatriot Reilly Opelka in 2019, losing the match to Jean-Julien Rojer and Horia Tecau. Before arriving in Basel, Fritz was in Riyadh for the Six Kings Slam, where he first knocked out Alexander Zverev but lost his semifinal match against Carlos Alcaraz, before he was handed the walkover by Novak Djokovic in the third-place match.

Apart from the American ace, the other seeded players in the draw are: compatriot Ben Shelton, Casper Ruud, Felix Auger-Aliassime, Jiri Lehecka, Jakub Mensik, Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, and Denis Shapovalov.

Shelton will be hoping to regain his form as he was forced to withdraw from his US Open third-round match due to an injury, and after recovering, he failed to go beyond his first match at the Shanghai Masters. He was the runner-up in last year’s Swiss Indoors.

Ruud arrived in Basel after a successful run at the Stockholm Open, where he defeated Ugo Humbert to clinch his second title of the season following the Madrid Open. The Norwegian ace has never played the final here.

Auger-Aliassime is a two-time champion in Basel. He clinched the title in 2022 by defeating Holger Rune and defended it the following season by going past Hubert Hurkacz. Rune had signed up to play, but he tore his Achilles tendon during the Stockholm Open and will skip the tournament.

Roger Federer holds the record for most Swiss Indoors titles (10), last winning it in 2019 by defeating Alex de Minaur. It was also his career’s last tour-level title as the Swiss maestro hung up his racket three years later.

Federer also holds the record for the oldest champion in Basel (won in 2019 at the age of 38). Jim Courier holds the record for the youngest man to win the title here (19 in 1989). The highest-ranked player to win the title is Pete Sampras and Federer (both of whom won it when they were ranked No.1). The 20-time Grand Slam champion also holds the record for most matches won at the Swiss Indoors (75), with him also being the last local star to win the title.

Another ATP 500 event is also underway this week. It’s the Vienna Open where World No.2 Jannik Sinner headlines the draw. He is chasing his second title in the tournament as well as his fourth title of the season, following his victories at the Australian Open, Wimbledon, and the China Open.

Alcaraz is not in action in either of the events. He will be next seen in action at the Paris Masters- the last Masters 1000 of the season. The six-time Grand Slam champion will be chasing his ninth title of the season.
