The 54th edition of the WTA Finals is scheduled to start on November 1, while the final will be held on November 8. Coco Gauff will enter the tournament as the defending champion.

Last year, the two-time Grand Slam singles champion defeated Qinwen Zheng to end the year-end championships for the first time in her career. Zheng failed to qualify for the event. Iga Swiatek is also a former WTA Finals winner. She clinched the title in 2023 by defeating Jessica Pegula. Last year, she failed to progress beyond the round robin stage.

Aryna Sabalenka is a former runner-up at the WTA Finals, losing the match to Caroline Garcia. Last year, she lost to Gauff in the semifinals. Apart from Sabalenka, Gauff, and Swiatek, the players who qualified for the year-end championships are: Pegula, Amanda Anisimova, Elena Rybakina, Madison Keys, and Jasmine Paolini. Pegula reached the 2023 WTA Finals. This year, she won three and lost three finals.

Pegula suffered defeats at the hands of Keys at the Adelaide International, to Sabalenka at the Miami Open, and to Gauff at the Wuhan Open. The 2024 US Open runner-up clinched the ATX Open by beating McCartney Kessler, the Charleston Open by beating Sofia Kenin, and the Bad Homburg Open by beating Swiatek. Anisimova has qualified for the event for the first time in her career thanks to her successful runs in two events from five finals.

She clinched the titles at the Qatar Open and China Open by defeating Jelena Ostapenko and Linda Noskova, respectively. She lost the Queen’s Club Championships final to Tatjana Maria, Wimbledon final to Swiatek, and the US Open final to Sabalenka.

Prize money for the 2025 WTA Finals

The total prize pool for this year’s WTA Finals is $15,500,000. From this, the winner will get $2,540,000, while the runner-up will get $1,290,000. The WTA Finals offer the highest prize money after the Grand Slam events.

Participant fee $340,000
Round robin win $355,000
Semifinals win $1,290,000
Finals win$2,540,000

Rybakina dealt with a lot of ups and downs this season and won titles at the Strasbourg Open by beating Liudmila Samsonova and the Ningbo Open by beating Ekaterina Alexandrova. But these wins did not help her secure a spot in the WTA Finals, and all she needed were two more wins. She clinched those matches at the Pan Pacific Open against Leylah Fernandez and Victoria Mboko.

Right after winning the matches, she withdrew from the event, citing fitness problems. Rybakina failed to reach the semifinals of the WTA Finals in 2023 and 2024.

Keys is the winner of two titles this season, clinching the Adelaide International and the Australian Open by beating Pegula and Sabalenka, respectively. But since then, she has failed to reach a final. The 30-year-old has not yet advanced beyond the round robin stage at the WTA Finals.

Paolini qualified for the WTA Finals for the first time last year but couldn’t grab a spot in the semifinals. This season, the two-time Grand Slam singles runner-up lost and won one singles event. She defeated Gauff in the Italian Open final and lost the Cincinnati Masters to Swiatek.

Each player will win 200 points in the round robin stage. Those who will reach the semifinals will win 400 points, while the winner will get 500 points. But if the winner lifts the title without losing a match in the round-robin stage, she will have 1500 points.

The tournament’s most successful player is 18-time Grand Slam singles champion Martina Navratilova, who clinched eight singles titles. The player who last defended the WTA Finals was 23-time Grand Slam singles champion Serena Williams (2012 – 2014). Since then, the tournament has seen nine different champions.
