The grass swing is done and dusted. At Wimbledon, Linda Noskova became the third Czech woman in four years to win the title after a three-set win over Karolina Muchova. On the men’s side, Jannik Sinner defended his title by defeating Alexander Zverev in four sets.
Both the champions, however, won’t be competing at the Citi Open, an ATP 500 and WTA 500 tournament, the main draw of which is set to start on July 27 and will be concluded on August 2. The matches will be held at the William H.G. FitzGerald Tennis Center in Washington, D.C.
The top eight seeds on the ATP side are: Alex de Minaur, Ben Shelton, Taylor Fritz, Lorenzo Musetti, Learner Tien, Frances Tiafoe, Jakub Mensik, and Arthur Fils. Shelton received the wild card, and so have Jack Draper, Stefanos Tsitsipas, and Kei Nishikori.
Felix Auger-Aliassime, who lost a thrilling five-hour, 14-minute quarterfinal to Novak Djokovic at Wimbledon, withdrew and is replaced by Ethan Quinn. Daniil Medvedev is replaced by Terence Atmane.
On the women’s side, the top eight seeds are: Jessica Pegula, Elina Svitolina, Naomi Osaka, Diana Shnaider, Anna Kalinskaya, Madison Keys, Leylah Fernandez, and Emma Navarro. The four players who received wild cards are: Pegula, Venus Williams, Sofia Kenin, and Qinwen Zheng. Five players pulled out of the tournament: Jaqueline Cristian, Iva Jovic, Marta Kostyuk, Jasmine Paolini, and Katerina Siniakova.
Fernandez will enter the tournament as the defending champion. She defeated Kalinskaya last year. On the men’s side, de Minaur will be competing as the defending champion. He beat Alejandro Davidovich Fokina last year.
Women’s World No.1 Aryna Sabalenka won’t be playing. She instead will start her campaign on the North American hardcourt swing at the Canadian Open. Iga Swiatek, Coco Gauff, and Elena Rybakina will also not be competing.
On the men’s side, apart from Sinner, players like Carlos Alcaraz, Djokovic, and Alexander Zverev will not be competing. Alcaraz, who has not yet competed since the Barcelona Open because of a wrist injury, is scheduled to play the Cincinnati Masters.
