The 24th edition of the Doha Open will run from February 8 to 14 at the Khalifa International Tennis and Squash Complex in Qatar. This is the season’s first WTA 1000 event and the first of two consecutive tournaments in the same category on the Middle East swing, where top players will battle it out for the title and staggering prize money.

Six-time Grand Slam champion Iga Swiatek will be the top seed at the tournament following Aryna Sabalenka’s withdrawal. The World No.1 withdrawal means that she will take an extra week of rest after failing to win the Australian Open last week. The Belarusian star once again failed to win the Melbourne Grand Slam, leaving empty-handed after losing to Elena Rybakina.

That leaves Swiatek with an opportunity to win the Doha Open for the fourth time in her career. She won in 2024 but failed to reach the final the following year, losing to Jelena Ostapenko in the semi-finals. She’s seeking to bounce back at the tournament after crashing out of the Australian Open in the quarter-finals.

However, Amanda Anisimova, the defending champion, will be back on the court at the Qatar Open. The American star claimed her maiden WTA 1000 title at the tournament last year after beating Ostapenko in straight sets. She was impressive in 2025, reaching back-to-back Grand Slam finals on tour.

Nonetheless, she has yet to reach a semi-final this season. She crashed out of the Brisbane International in the round of 16 after losing to Marta Kostyuk and then lost to Jessica Pegula in the quarter-finals. But, she has cemented her place in the top 5 of the WTA rankings after both tournaments.

Coco Gauff will be the fourth seed at the tournament and has the advantage of being a strong contender for the title. She arrived in Doha after a disappointing quarter-finals exit at the Australian Open, where she lost to Elina Svitolina, who reached the semi-finals of the Melbourne Grand Slam.

Gauff crashed out in the second round of the Qatar Open last year after losing in straight sets to Marta Kostyuk. Should she reach the semi-finals or final of the tournament, she might leapfrog Anisimova, who must defend the WTA 1000 title to keep her place in World No.4. Apart from that, it will also be an opportunity for Gauff to win her second WTA 1000 title in more than a year.

For the season’s first WTA 1000 tournament, the total prize pool is $4,088,211, which is slightly more than what the tournament offered last year ($3,654,963). Last year in the final, Amanda Anisimova after her straight-set win over Jelena Ostapenko, bagged $597,000. This year, the winner will take home an impressive $665,000, more than what Anisimova took home.

However, several players have withdrawn from the Doha Open due to injury. Marta Kostyuk has opted to skip the tournament to recover from a torn ankle injury, while Lois Boisson, who has yet to play a match this season, is still recovering from an injury, while Eva Lys and Veronika Kudermetova are sidelined.

With a host of withdrawals, Alexandra Eala, Emilliano Arango, Daria Kasatkina, Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, and Cristina Bucsa have moved from holding a spot in the qualifying rounds to securing a place in the main draw of the tournament. Also, the likes of Qinwen Zheng, Paula Badosa, and Markéta Vondrousova are expected to take part in the event after being away for months due to injury.
