In Short
  • Total prize money for the 2026 Italian Open is $9,652,876 for men and $8,312,293 for women.
  • Men's champion will receive $1,180,498, while women's champion will earn $1,234,235.
  • Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz are notable players skipping the tournament due to injuries.

The Italian Open is the last big tournament on clay before the French Open. The main draw of the sixth WTA 1000 of the season will start on May 5, while the main draw of the fifth Masters 1000 will start on the following day.

Women’s final is set to be held on May 17, while that of men will be held on the following day. Jasmine Paolini will be playing as the defending champion. She defeated Coco Gauff last year.

Carlos Alcaraz, who lifted the Italian Open last year by beating home favorite Jannik Sinner, will be skipping the tournament. Because of a wrist injury he suffered during the Barcelona Open, he withdrew from the Madrid Open for the second consecutive time. He will also be skipping the Roland Garros, where he is the two-time reigning champion.

Last year, he defeated Sinner in the French Open final. The Italian has yet to win the Italian Open. In the Madrid Open, he will be playing against Alexander Zverev, the winner of two Italian Open titles. He won it for the first time in 2017 against Novak Djokovic and Nicolas Jarry in 2024.

On the women’s side, Gauff, the reigning French Open champion, will be hoping to end her title drought. So far this year, she has only played one final, in Miami, but lost the title to Aryna Sabalenka.

The Belarusian ace finished the 2024 Italian Open as the runner-up, losing to four-time Roland Garros champion Iga Swiatek. The six-time Major champion will be chasing her fourth title in Rome after wins in 2021 (beat Karolina Pliskova), 2022 (defeated Ons Jabeur), and 2024.

The 24-year-old, however, has not yet won a title since the 2025 Korea Open. Swiatek, in fact, hasn’t reached a semifinal this year. At the Madrid Open, she was forced to retire mid-match from her third-round match due to illness.

Marta Kostyuk will be chasing her second back-to-back WTA 1000 title, as in the Madrid Open final, she went past Mirra Andreeva to win her career’s first title in this category. She will also be chasing her third consecutive title after wins in Madrid and Rouen. Kostyuk has never progressed past the fourth round in the Italian capital, while Andreeva is a one-time quarterfinalist.

It’s unclear whether Novak Djokovic will be playing in the tournament or not. The 24-time Grand Slam champion was last seen in action in the fourth round of the Indian Wells Masters, where Jack Draper knocked him out.

Djokovic had skipped the Rome event last year and instead played the Geneva Open, where he ended his trophy drought by defeating Hubert Hurkacz, becoming the third man in the Open Era to reach the 100 title tally.

The Serb, however, featured in the final of this year’s Australian Open after eliminating two-time defending champion Sinner. But in the title clash, he failed to go past Alcaraz, who became the youngest man in the Open Era to complete the Career Grand Slam. Sinner will be bidding for the Career Grand Slam at the French Open, where he finished as the runner-up last year after squandering a two-set lead and three match points.

The Madrid Open is the only event so far where Sabalenka failed to reach the final. She won titles in Brisbane, Indian Wells, and Miami, and lost to Elena Rybakina in the Australian Open final. Rybakina, who will be chasing her third title of the season in Rome, is a former champion in the tournament (won in 2023 after receiving a walkover from Anhelina Kalinina).
