The qualifying rounds of the Queen’s Club Championships were held on June 6 and June 7, while the main draw kicked off on June 8. Last year, the event was added to the WTA calendar after over 50 years.
Tatjana Maria won the title last year by defeating Amanda Anisimova, becoming the oldest woman to lift a WTA 500 title (37 years and 10 months old). The German, however, did not receive a wild card for a direct entry into the main draw this year. In her two qualifying round matches, Maria defeated Yuriko Miyazaki and Kamilla Rakhimova.
Her victory last year also made her the oldest woman to win a tour-level title since Serena Williams‘ win over countrywoman Jessica Pegula in the ASB Classic final.
Williams is back on the tour and is competing at Queen’s. She hung up her racket at the 2022 US Open and recently announced that the rumors of her comeback are true through an Instagram video. The 23-time Grand Slam singles champion, however, is not playing singles.
She and partner Victoria Mboko received wild cards. In their first match, Williams and Mboko beat the pair of Erin Routliffe and Nicole Melichar-Martinez.
Elena Rybakina is competing as the first seed and will start her campaign against Maria. In the first half of the draw, apart from Rybakina, Mboko is the other seeded player. The reigning Canadian Open champion also reached the final of this year’s Qatar Open but lost the title to Karolina Muchova.
In the second half of the draw, Sorana Cirstea, Belinda Bencic, Iva Jovic, and Anisimova are the seeded players. Cirstea will be opening her campaign against Emma Raducanu, which will be their first meeting since the final of the Transylvania Open. Raducanu reached a tour-level final for the first time since her win at the 2021 US Open.

The grass season started after the conclusion of the French Open. Teenager Mirra Andreeva breezed past qualifier Maja Chwalinska to win her first Grand Slam title, becoming the first Russian woman since Maria Sharapova at the 2014 French Open to win a Major.
Right after the conclusion of the women’s events at the Queen’s, the men will start their campaign. Their main draw matches will start on June 15, and the final is scheduled to be held on June 21.
The main draw of the Wimbledon Championships is set to start on June 29. Iga Swiatek, who has yet to reach a final this year, will be competing as the defending champion. She clinched a 6-0, 6-0 win over Amanda Anisimova last year.
In the men’s event, Jannik Sinner will enter Wimbledon as the defending champion. He defeated Carlos Alcaraz last year. The Spaniard will be skipping the tournament because of a wrist injury he suffered during the Barcelona Open.
