The first Major of the season, the Australian Open, was concluded on February 1. It saw Carlos Alcaraz win his first title by defeating 10-time Australian Open champion Novak Djokovic in four sets.

It was the 22-year-old’s first final in the first Major of the season, and it helped him break the record of Rafael Nadal. Alcaraz, who is now the youngest man in the Open Era to complete the Career Grand Slam of the Melbourne Slam, withdrew from season’s first ATP 500 indoor hardcourt tournament- the Rotterdam Open. The seven-time Grand Slam champion lifted his career’s first indoor hardcourt title in this event last year by defeating Alex de Minaur, who will be playing the tournament as the first seed.

The qualifying rounds of the Rotterdam Open will get underway on February 7 and will be played till February 8. The main draw is scheduled to start on February 9, while the title clash will be held on February 15. The matches will be held at Rotterdam Ahoy in Rotterdam, The Netherlands.

Alexander Zverev, who lost to Alcaraz in the longest semifinal of the Australian Open (five hours and 27 minutes), has also pulled out of the Rotterdam Open. Apart from de Minaur, the other seven seeded players in the draw are: Felix Auger-Aliassime, Alexander Bublik, Daniil Medvedev, Jack Draper, Karen Khachanov, Cameron Norrie, and Tomas Machac. The German never won the title in the tournament.

World No.2 Jannik Sinner, who failed to complete a three-peat at Melbourne Park with a five-set defeat to Djokovic in the semifinals, will also not be playing in the tournament. He was the winner in Rotterdam in 2024. His opponent in the final was de Minaur. Sinner also played the final of the 2023 Rotterdam Open but lost the match in three sets to Medvedev.

Two players have received the wildcards: Botic van de Zandschulp and Stan Wawrinka. In Alcaraz and Zverev’s places, Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard and Jesper de Jong will be playing.

In the draw of 32 players, eight are the seeded ones, though they will not be receiving the first-round byes. This year’s Rotterdam Open will also feature three former champions, and they are Wawrinka, Auger-Aliassime, and Medvedev, with the players winning the titles in 2015, 2022, and 2023, respectively.

Prize money for the 2026 Rotterdam Open

The total prize pool for this year’s Rotterdam Open is $2,906,677. From this, the champion will receive $543,593, while the runner-up will get $292,572.

Roger Federer, who retired at the 2022 Laver Cup, won the most titles at the Rotterdam Open (three). He also won the most number of matches (28). The 20-time Grand Slam champion is the oldest player to win the event (38), lifting it in 2018. Miloslav Mecir holds the record for the youngest champion (won it at the age of 20 in 1985).

Jimmy Connors (1978) and Federer (2005) were the only players who won the title when they were ranked World No.1. Anders Jarryd holds the record for the lowest-ranked player to win the title. He won it in 1993 when he stood in 156th spot on the rankings table. Jan Siemerink is the last Dutchman to win the home title (in 1998).

The winner will win 500 points, while the runner-up will get 330 points. The players reaching the semifinals will get 200 points, while those playing the quarterfinals will receive 100 points. The players featuring in the first and the second rounds are awarded zero and 50 points, respectively.
