The Wuhan Open is the last tournament of the season in the WTA 1000 series. The main draw of the eighth edition of the tournament will be held from October 6 to 12 at the Optics Valley International Tennis Center in Wuhan, China.

At present, the penultimate WTA 1000 of the season, the China Open, is underway and will be concluded on October 5. In Wuhan, Aryna Sabalenka will be the first seed and will also be playing a tournament for the first time since clinching her fourth Grand Slam singles title at the US Open by beating Amanda Anisimova. The World No.1 skipped the China Open because of an injury.

Sabalenka will enter the tournament as the defending champion. Last year, she upset home favorite and 2024 Paris Olympics gold medalist Qinwen Zheng in three sets to win her third title in the tournament. Zheng, who played the China Open after recovering from an elbow injury, will be skipping the Wuhan Open because of the same injury.

World No.2 Iga Swiatek has zero points to defend, given that she was forced to skip the entire Asian swing due to her three-week provisional suspension last year. Sabalenka, Swiatek, Coco Gauff, and Anisimova are the top four seeds. Swiatek, who won her third title of the season at the Korea Open, crashed out of the China Open with a three-set defeat to Emma Navarro in the fourth round.

The Pole will be making her debut in the tournament. This year, the six-time Grand Slam champion reached her first grass-court final at the Bad Homburg Open but failed to beat Jessica Pegula. She was, however, successful in clinching the title at Wimbledon by double-bageling Anisimova. Later, she lifted the Cincinnati Open by defeating Jasmine Paolini and the Korea Open by defeating Ekaterina Alexandrova.

Gauff has won just one title this year- the French Open by beating Sabalenka. Apart from the Grand Slam title, she also reached the finals of the Madrid Open and the Italian Open, losing them to Sabalenka and Jasmine Paolini, respectively.

Anisimova has so far clinched only her first WTA 1000 title at the Qatar Open by beating compatriot Pegula, losing in the finals of the Queen’s Club Championships, Wimbledon, and the US Open. She has never progressed beyond the second round of the Wuhan Open. She will be up against Linda Noskova in the China Open championship clash.

The tournament will also determine the next few players who will qualify for the WTA Finals. The top four players- Aryna Sabalenka, Iga Swiatek, Coco Gauff, and Amanda Anisimova- have already grabbed their ticket for Riyadh, and so is reigning Australian Open champion Madison Keys, who skipped the China Open and will be skipping the Wuhan Open due to an injury.

Sabalenka holds a 17-0 record in Wuhan thanks to her victories in her three appearances (2018, 2019, 2024). The Belarusian is also the player with the most Wuhan Open titles. Apart from her, only three players have clinched the title since the WTA 1000 event made its debut in 2014. These players are Petra Kvitova (retired), Venus Williams, and Caroline Garcia (retired).

The final WTA 1000 of the season is a weeklong event, and 56 players are participating- 44 are from direct entries, four are wild card entrants, and eight are qualifiers.
