The 2025 ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup turned out to be a historic one for the Indian team as it lifted the title for the first time in the competition’s 52-year history. Not only did the team create history, but they also took home a record-breaking prize money from the International Cricket Council.

The Women in Blue defeated South Africa by 52 runs in the final at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai. India, batting first, posted a challenging total of 298/7, guided by an 87-run innings from Shafali Verma, and crucial knocks from Smriti Mandhana and Deepti Sharma. In response, South Africa could only manage 246 runs before being bowled out, with Deepti Sharma taking a match-winning five-wicket haul.

As the Indian Women’s team overcame the heartbreaks of the 2005 and 2017 World Cup final defeats by clinching the trophy, they also received a record prize money of $4.48 millions (approx. INR 40 crores) from the ICC for the victory. ICC had announced a staggering increase in the prize pool ahead of the 2025 tournament, at $13.88 million, 297 percent more than the prize money 2022 edition of the Women’s CWC.

In fact, India’s $4.48 million winner’s prize is almost 239 percent increase from the $1.32 million that was awarded to Australia in 2022. The runners-up for the 2025 Women’s World Cup, South Africa, took home another $2.24 million.

Meanwhile, the two semi-finalists, Australia and England, claimed a prize money of $1.12 million each. The prize pool for the 2025 Women’s CWC is so huge, that it even exceeds the $10 million prize pool of the 2023 Men’s ODI World Cup.

Such has been the impact of India’s victory over South Africa in the Women’s World Cup final, that it prompted BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia to also announce a cash prize of INR 51 crores for the players, selectors and the members of the team management. The 51-crore reward is, however, still behind what the Indian Men’s cricket team was paid after its 2024 T20 World Cup triumph, INR 125 crores.

Nonetheless, all of it is going to impact women’s cricket not just in India, but across the world. The Women in Blue will now be gearing up to win its first-ever T20 World Cup title, with the T20 World Cup set to take place in England in June-July 2026.

The Indian Women’s team overcame challenges to turn the odds around, after finishing fourth in the standings at the end of the group stages of the 2025 Women’s World Cup. It was initially perceived that India might only make it to the semi-finals, after consecutive group stage defeats to Australia, England and South Africa. However, the team made a comeback and capped it off with a historic final triumph.

Virat Kohli joined in the celebrations, sharing a heartfelt message on social media after the final win. The 36-year-old exclaimed that the victory would inspire generations of aspiring female cricketers to take up the sport, while also lauding the hard work put in by the Indian players. He specifically praised the efforts of captain Harmanpreet Kaur, as well as the rest of the players and the team management.

The girls have created history and I couldn’t be more proud as an Indian to see the hard work of so many years come to life finally… Well done india. Enjoy the moment to the fullest. This will inspire generations of girls to take up the sport in our country. Jai Hind!
