Promising Australian Alex De Minaur has set modest goals ahead of the new season
Alex De Minaur is the highest-ranked Australian male tennis player in singles. He achieved a career-high singles ranking of No.18 in the ATP rankings in 2019 and is currently ranked at No.23.
Turning professional in 2005, De Minaur earned some respect on his name after claiming three ATP titles in 2019. One in Sydney, followed by his second one in Atlanta and lastly, the Zhuhai Championships.
This year, the young budding talent made it to his first quarter-finals of a Major at the US Open. Dominic Thiem ended De Minaur’s impressive run and went on to claim his maiden Grand Slam.
Alex had a decent 2020 where he managed to emerge as a promising prospect who is likely to challenge the top contenders in the sport in the coming years. Between his pre-season training for 2021, the Australian revealed his expectation from the coming tour.
I want to make second weeks of Slams: Alex de Minaur
Referred to as ‘Speed Demon’, Alex has impressed many tennis experts with his incredible potential. With a height of 6 ft, he is known for his flat forehand shot after a short backswing. However, considering his experience in tennis, the 21-year-old has laid out modest goals to work on.
At the Belgium Antwerp event, De Minaur lost the title clash to another next-gen promising prospect, Ugo Humbert.
Hoping to maintain the same form next year as well, De Minaur said, “Hopefully, as always, I want to make second weeks of Slams. Want to go and be going deep every week, week in and week out, that’s the plan. Who knows what will happen, but that’s what I’m looking forward to and going to be pushing for.”
Although falling short against Thiem at the US Open this year, the youngster upset many top players including Richard Gasquet, Karen Khachanov and Vasek Pospisil at the Flushing Meadows.
Next year, De Minaur will aim to create more upsets among the top players. Given the challenges of playing at Melbourne, his young age will favor him against the rest.
The Australian won his first ATP title in Sydney and winning a Grand Slam title in his home country will be a dream come true for Alex De Minaur.
The Australian Open 2021 begins from February 8th as announced by Tennis Australia.
