Philip Rivers last played in the league back in the 2020 COVID-19-affected season, and has since retired to become the head coach of his son’s high school football team.

The then-father of 9 chose to live a family life and soon welcomed his 10th child with his wife, Tiffany. He also became a grandfather as his oldest daughter, Halle, brought her little bundle of joy into this world.

In the midst of all this, the NFL was the least of his worries, and the trash-talking expert chose not to toe the line taken by many of his peers by entering the broadcasting or podcasting world. After all these years, he finally got a call from former coach Shane Steichen after Daniel Jones went down with a season-ending rupture to his Achilles Tendon.

Initially, many felt it was an exercise to see if he could play, especially after years of not being in game-day shape. But now, that has become a reality.

The Colts are signing QB Philip Rivers to their practice squad, per The Insiders. The Hall of Fame semifinalist, age 44, rejoins the Indy QB room to support Riley Leonard and serve as a potential option down the road. A dramatic return.

This means the 44-year-old would back up rookie QB Riley Leonard. However, if the latter cannot overcome the injury he suffered in the same game Jones ended his season, chances are that Philip Rivers could start for the Colts.

Fans react to Philip Rivers signing with Colts

Football fans are aware that there is a shortage of quality quarterbacks in the NFL. Those who can play and can start are already signed on to one of the 30-odd teams.

Those that remain are the bottom rung options. Teams do not want to bet their season on them, especially when they are already in a position to reach the postseason.

But to bring in a 44-year-old ‘grandpa’, who has not played a game in 5 years, was as far-fetched as fans could think of. They had various reactions, most of them hilarious, at the thought of Philip Rivers returning. Check out examples of those comments below:

Philip Rivers could return and help the Indianapolis Colts reach the playoffs in their first full year of being led by the late Jim Irsay‘s daughters. If that happens, the league’s scriptwriters will have a field day.

ESPN analyst prefers Colts starting Riley Leonard

The news of Philip Rivers coming back from retirement to sign was a shock to many. When the cast of NFL Live was discussing this topic, Dan Orlovsky had a different perspective.

Riley Leonard, what is your knee injury? You are a 6th-round pick with the chance to go on a playoff run. I’d have to be dead to not be on the field. I would have challenged Riley Leonard, get on field… If he was even remotely healthy, he should be the one playing.

Dan Orlovsky said

The former quarterback believes Riley Leonard should fight for the chance to start for the Colts and lead them into the postseason. Only then can he kickstart his career as a legitimate quarterback prospect in the league.

The team has all the tools to make it to the playoffs, and Orlovsky hopes Leonard takes this opportunity and makes a name for himself, rather than leaving it to fate and Philip Rivers.
