Qiang Wang will not be visiting the United States this summer. On Saturday, the Chinese, ranked 29th in the world, announced her withdrawal from Cincinnati and the US Open.
Citing heavy travel restrictions and health security reasons, Wang therefore prefers to refrain from making this trip and abandon the American stage.
“I’m very sad that I have to make this announcement,” said Wang.
“Due to travel restrictions and safety concerns, my team and I have to withdraw from Western & Southern Open and US Open. It is a tough decision for me.”
“I want to thank everyone for the extraordinary effort and hope to see you all next year in the US”.
Ashleigh Barty also withdraws from US Open
She joins the list of players that have withdrawn from the tennis tour in the US, which includes Ashleigh Barty, the Australian World No 1, who also opted out from playing at the US Open.
Wang also made the decision to separate from her French coach, Thomas Drouet as the current conditions no longer allow for collaboration and regular training.
Drouet and Wang have worked together since Roland Garros 2019. With him, Wang reached the quarter-finals at the US Open and dominated Serena Williams in Australia last January .
“Under such circumstances Thomas and I cannot team up for matches and regular training. After reflection, we decided by mutual agreement to stop. I thank him for his help and all that, she expressed.
