The result wasn’t what Qinwen Zheng expected when she won the first set and took the lead in the second, while locking horns with Coco Gauff in the final of the WTA Finals in Riyadh on Saturday (November 9).

In spite of the lead, she ended up losing the match with a scoreline of 3-6, 6-4, 7-6(7-2). After the match, the Chinese said she saw ‘clearly’ why she lost the match, accepting that she failed to capitalize on her chances.

And there are few, you know, a lot of chances during the match, especially when I am the one who is leading, and I gave the chance away. But you know it’s tennis, sometimes [that] can happen.

A defeat, especially after leading during a match hurt so much and Zheng felt that after her loss. She now wishes to come back stronger the next time.

There are a lot of things for me to learn. Obviously, the Olympic gold medal was unforgettable. I feel tennis is… I love to play, but tennis can hurt you, especially when you fight so hard and then you lose a match, but at the same time, it’s interesting because you always find things to improve.

Qinwen Zheng added

At the Paris Olympics, Zheng crossed all the hurdles on her path, including four-time French Open champion Iga Swiatek, to take home the gold medal.

Qinwen Zheng says defeat to Aryna Sabalenka and Coco Gauff would help her improve her game

Qinwen Zheng had the chance to win her first Grand Slam title earlier this year when she reached the Australian Open final, but she lost easily to current World No.1 Aryna Sabalenka. Now that she lost another big final, she vows to improve her game.

There’s lots of rallies, very endurance, you know, she’s (Gauff) a type of solid player. I think her game style is quite different from Sabalenka, the [other] match that I lost. So both of these players, when I lost against them, makes me think, makes me find a way to improve.

In spite of her defeat, the 21-year-old has also become the only Chinese player after Li Na in 2013 to reach the summit clash of the WTA Finas. Apart from the Olympics gold medal, Zheng has won the Palermo Ladies Open and the Japan Open.
