- India suffered a 76-run loss to South Africa, marking their largest margin of defeat in T20 World Cup history.
- To qualify for the semi-finals, India must win their remaining Super Eight matches against Zimbabwe and West Indies while improving their net run rate.
- Team selection has come under scrutiny after vice-captain Axar Patel was dropped for the match against South Africa, leading to criticism from former players.
Team India’s path to semi-final qualification in the 2026 T20 World Cup has turned difficult following a crushing loss to South Africa. It was a one-sided game, marking India’s largest-ever margin of loss in the tournament’s history, with the Proteas securing a 76-run victory.
Defending champions India walked into the tournament not only as favorites but also as the World’s No.1-ranked T20I side. After a flawless group-stage campaign, the Men in Blue found themselves placed in a tough Super Eight group with South Africa, Zimbabwe, and West Indies, all teams with zero losses in earlier groups. However, a humiliation to the Proteas, whom India had previously beaten in the 2024 T20 WC final, has created a troubling situation.
India’s defeat to South Africa at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad significantly dented the team’s chances of making it to the semi-finals. Chasing a 187-run target, Suryakumar Yadav and Co. were bowled out for a mere 111 runs. David Miller was adjudged POTM for scoring 63 runs off just 35 balls. Marco Jansen was the pick among the Proteas bowlers, as he finished with figures of 4/22.
To make it to the semi-finals, India will have to finish in the top two of Group 1, which requires winning their remaining Super Eight fixtures against Zimbabwe and West Indies. At the same time, the hosts will also have to secure these wins in a convincing manner, in order to improve their current NRR of -3.800, which might turn into the decisive factor in case South Africa loses a game and another team wins twice.
For India to ensure an easy semi-final berth, it would require the Proteas to win both their next matches and finish with six points, as long as India finishes with four. In case India loses to either Zimbabwe or the West Indies, they would only reach a maximum of two points then. For India to still qualify, there would need to be a ‘circle of defeats’ where Zimbabwe, West Indies, and India all defeat each other. This specific outcome would create a three-way tie for second place, making NRR the tie-breaker.

Thereafter, Suryakumar Yadav and his men will be looking at the remaining Super Eight fixtures as ‘do-or-die’ encounters. India will face automatic elimination if they lose both of their upcoming fixtures, scheduled to be played on February 26 and March 1.
India’s team selection under scrutiny following South Africa loss
During India’s first 2026 T20 World Cup Super Eight clash against South Africa, vice-captain Axar Patel was dropped from the playing XI in favor of Washington Sundar. This decision seemed to have backfired, with team selection strategies being increasingly criticized.

India suffered their first defeat of the WC campaign. Patel saw the team lose from the sidelines, after being surprisingly left out on the bench for what was termed a ‘tactical move’ by the team management. The Indian vice-captain has been a regular in the format and has picked up six wickets in the three matches that he has played in the WC so far, at an economy well below 7.
Former Indian spinner R. Ashwin criticized the team selection call, but agreed to Sundar’s usage against the left-handers in the South African lineup. He, however, termed Axar Patel as the team’s ‘Most Valuable Player’, stressing his importance in the side. Ashwin also pointed to the 32-year-old’s display during India’s victorious 2024 T20 WC campaign, where he scored a crucial 47 runs off 31 balls in the final.
I 100 percent agree that if you want to use Washington Sundar against left-handers, then you play him… But Axar Patel has been your MVP in T20 cricket. Let’s not forget what Axar Patel did in the last World Cup against South Africa.

"This is a very big lesson for India that they should never come into any match without proper preparation. Today, India came completely unprepared. South Africa, on the other hand, came fully prepared… pic.twitter.com/Q6wnjl8ME8
Ashwin’s critique was backed by Washington Sundar’s performance as well. Sundar bowled only two overs, conceding 17 runs without taking a wicket. His batting was also underwhelming, as he scored only 11 runs off 11 balls during the chase.
