The hockey world is currently getting ready for some international play. This week, the 4 Nations Face Off between the United States, Canada, Sweden and Finland will kick off. Ahead of this big event, Team USA have suffered a blow as Vancouver Canucks star Quinn Hughes has pulled out of it.
The Canucks captain has missed the four games due to an undisclosed injury. His last match game against the Dallas Stars on January 31 where they lost 5-3. In this game, he only played in three shifts and appeared to be in some discomfort on the bench.
On February 2, Hughes did take part in the warmups ahead of the game against the Detroit Red Wings. However, he did not take part in this game.
While discussing his absence from the ice field on Wednesday, his head coach Rick Tocchet called him a “smart kid” and claimed he knows what is at stake for the team at the moment.
I know Quinn is a USA guy, loves his country, playing with his brother. There’s a lot of positives to that. But he’s a smart kid, too. He understands what’s at stake.
Rick Tocchet said as per NHL.com
Hughes was one of the first six players to be named in the USA roster. His brother and New Jersey Devils’ forward star Jack Hughes was later named in the team as well. The elder Hughes has now been replaced by Jake Sanderson of the Ottawa Senators.

Hughes withdrew because he’s injured. He’s been injured for 5 games. He’s not doing it to rest up for the Canucks. He’s withdrawn because he can’t play. It’s really that simple.

Fans not realizing that this means he’s probably a more injured than officially thought, and probably not ready in 2 weeks

The Vancouver Canucks are currently 26-18-11 while being fourth in the Pacific Division standings. With goaltender Thatcher Demko suffering another blow this past Saturday against the Toronto Maple Leafs, the team cannot afford to lose captain Hughes for a long time.
The defenseman, who won the Norris Trophy award for being the league’s best defenseman last season, currently leads his team in the points category. In 47 games this season he has 14 goals and 45 assists, rounding his total tally to 59 points.
