After the winning ICC T20 World Cup 2024, Rohit Sharma announced his retirement and Suryakumar Yadav was named as the new T20I captain. Gautam Gambhir replaced Rahul Dravid as the head coach and a new era in Indian cricket started.
However, many are thinking that Yadav isn’t a long-term captaincy choice as he is already in the twilight of his career. Moreover, India needs an option to replace Sharma as the ODI and Test captain, after he hangs up his boots from the two formats.
Former Indian fielding coach R Sridhar praised Shubman Gill, specifically highlighted him as an all-format player, suggesting that Gill could be groomed as the successor to captain Sharma in Test matches and ODIs. Sridhar expressed confidence that India might see Gill as the captain in all formats after the 2027 World Cup.
Shubman Gill for me is an all-format player and I think he would be the apprentice to captain Rohit Sharma in Test matches and ODIs. I am sure India will see him as the captain post 2027 World Cup in all formatsR Sridhar told Hindustan Times
Gill has been looked at as the leader of the next generation of Indian cricketers. He is being backed heavily by the team management and the BCCI.
Shubman Gill has been announced as the vice-captain of the India T20I and ODI team
Gill led India for the first time after the T20 World Cup 2024. He led a young Indian team to Zimbabwe for a 5-game T20I series and won the series by a margin of 4-1. Ahead of the tour of Sri Lanka, he was announced as the vice-captain of the T20I and ODI team. As per reports, he is also set to be appointed as the vice-captain of the Test team from the series against Bangladesh.
Gill led his IPL franchise Gujarat Titans for the first time after Hardik Pandya moved to Mumbai Indians ahead of IPL 2024. GT did not perform well under his captaincy.
However, the Indian team backs him a lot and he is one of the few players who gets a chance in all the three formats. Moreover, he is just 24 years old. So, he is being looked at as the future captain of India and the BCCI wants to give him experience by appointing him as the deputy to Yadav in T20Is and to Sharma in ODIs and Tests.
