R-Truth almost quit WWE early in his career
24/7 Champion R-Truth
Most of the WWE Superstars are quite different from the gimmicks that they portray on WWE TV. But if there is any Superstar whose real life persona is almost same as their WWE gimmick, that is R-Truth. Truth recently appeared on The New Day – Feel the Power podcast. He discusses his careers in wresling and rapping.
In the mid-90’s Truth was pursuing a career in rap, because of which he got a chance to meet top rappers like Tupac Shakur. Truth believes that both his careers go hand in hand. His music career introduced him to wrestling and his wrestling career helped him grow.
“When we come out, our music is the first thing that sets us off. It sets the pace; it sets the tone, so the music goes hand-in-hand with it. Once you put a character with it – which my musical character is just me, I don’t have to put anything with it but just energy, and it’s just me. So, I think the two coincide to help each other out.“
R-Truth’s introduction to WWE
Truth has had a really tough childhood. He has been arrested numerous times. His legal issues and his love for music brought him in contact with Jim Crockett, President of the NWA. Truth’s life changed when Crocket took him to a wrestling show and showed him Ric Flair. Crockett mentioned that R-Truth can be like him. He suggested Truth to mix his music and wrestling up to create his in-ring character.
Truth worked as an independent wrestler for 3 years and signed with WWE in 1999. But he was in developmental phase for close to a year. He was running out of money. He was sleeping on floor at Daniel Bryan’s place. Truth considered quitting WWE. But Road Dogg convinced him to continue.
Truth made his debut for WWE as K-Kwik, before moving to TNA. He returned to WWE in 2008 and won Tag Team Championship with Kofi Kingston.
Currently R-Truth is involved in WWE Raw’s comedic segments. He is the current WWE 24/7 Champion.
