Daniil Medvedev loses it yet again during the fourth round of the Rolex Monte Carlo Masters. The Russian was up against his friend, Karen Khachanov, in one of the more physically tough matches. Both evenly matched and tested each other for every point.
Khachanov started brilliantly, beating Medvedev in the first set. However, just as the match took an interesting turn, there was yet another wrong call that got Medvedev frustrated. Just like yesterday, the World No. 4 thought the ball was out, but his opponent was awarded the point.
However, unlike yesterday, this time was worse for World No. 4, who was working to stay in the game. Due to this, he lost the game, allowing Khachanov to serve for the match. Out of frustration, Medvedev threw his racket at the side screen. Luckily, it did not hit anyone, but the wild racket throw was noted down.
After this, the Russian argued with the chair umpire as well as the supervisor for the point. He wasn’t given the point but was penalized for shouting at the umpire.
After the warnings, he was fined a point penalty and entered the last set a point down. With this, Khachanov had one foot in the quarterfinals and soon served his way past Medvedev to reach his first Monte Carlo quarterfinal.
Karen Khachanov causes an upset in Monaco, as he gets past a frustrated Medvedev
An improved Karen Khachanov took out Daniil Medvedev in straight sets at the Rolex Monte Carlo Masters. He executed perfect forehands to put Medvedev in trouble. When World No. 4 had to control his cool, he lost it, giving Khachanov a breakthrough.
After receiving a point penalty, Khachanov had to serve it out, and he made it past Medvedev. Despite not having won that many matches against his friend, the Russian brought out his A-game to make it to the quarterfinals. A huge upset in Monaca as Khachanov advances 6-3, 7-5.
This marked his fourth Top 5 win, as he made it to his second Masters quarterfinals on clay. Overall, this is his 8th Masters 1000 quarterfinal, but a first in Monaco. The Russian now await the winners of Alexander Zverev and Stefanos Tsitsipas in the quarterfinals.
