Rafael Devers is in no mood to undergo any more transitions this season. On Thursday, the Boston Red Sox star blasted his team’s front office and refused to play in the first base position after the season-ending injury to Triston Casas.
Earlier this year, there was plenty of drama between the Red Sox and Devers. After spending almost his entire career as the third baseman of the team, he was asked to play as the Designated Hitter (DH). This came after the team roped in gold glove winner Alex Bregman and gave him the nod to play in the 3B position.
The transition from 3B to DH did not start well for Devers. In the first few games, he struggled heavily at the plate and set some unwanted MLB records. While he seems to have found his groove in the DH position, he was asked to change his position again.
The Red Sox started the year with Triston Casas as their 1B. However, he suffered a season-ending injury as he ruptured his patellar tendon running to first in their win against the Minnesota Twins last Friday. With him now gone, the Red Sox turned to Devers for the 1B.
The Dominican International expressed that it was not “appropriate” from this team to ask him to move to first base.
I know I’m a ballplayer, but at the same time, they can’t expect me to play every single position out there. In spring training, they talked to me and basically told me to put away my glove, that I wasn’t going to play any other position but DH. So right now, I just feel like it’s not an appropriate decision by them to ask me to play another position.

Popular MLB YouTuber slams Rafael Devers for refusing to play 1st base position for Red Sox
Rafael Devers made a huge statement recently. The 3-time MLB All-Star straight up refused to change positions from DH to first base. A popular MLB content creator on YouTube brutally slammed him for this later on X.

While reacting to this, X user fuzzyfromyt, popularly known as Fuzzy, attacked Devers for his actions. He boldly expressed that all Devers does is ‘cry’ and that took a wild shot at him.

In another tweet on X, the YouTuber with over 546k subscribers took a jab at Devers and those who came to his defense.
Rafael Devers and his defenders are making it seem like playing 1B is like walking into NASA and being asked to fly a rocketship to Jupiter to start a colony to save human civilization. Your teammates knee exploded. Go play 100 games at first and pick him up. This is insanity

What can the Red Sox do if Rafael Devers does not play as the 1st base?
The Boston Red Sox find themselves in a top spot at the moment. Following the season-ending injury to Triston Casas, Rafael Devers refused to step into his position and fill the void. What are the other things the Red Sox can do after this?

For starters, the team could play Kristian Campbell at first base. The second baseman was named the American League Rookie of the Month following an explosive start to the season.
The team could give him the first base position, shift Alex Bregman to second base and give Devers his 3rd base position again. The only problem is that Campbell has struggled at the second base and moving him to a new position could make things more difficult for the team.
Apart from him, Romy Gonzalez and Abraham Toro are the other internal options for the team. Both of them could provide a cover for the 1B position in the absence of Casas.

Finally, the team could try to bring someone from the outside via free agency or trade. Only time will tell what the American League team will eventually do to solve this first base crisis.
